The English lasses were by far the better team and only lost on a highly controversial penalty call by the NZ ref in which contact looked to have taken place a yard outside the box rounded off by a theatrical dive by the Japanese player, followed by the freak own goal by Bassett in the last minute of added time. In between I don't recall a serious shot on goal by the Japanese all game whereas we had numerous chances to score, including the thunderous shot which hit the bar. England should be very proud of these ladies gallant performance and in fact they were improving with every game and would have seriously threatened the U.S. in the final.
What a devastating end for theEnglish womens team - incredibly unlucky. All credit to them for a great performance in the tournament.
