The vote for centre midfield is looking pretty cut and dried, so Morgan Schneiderlin is added to the team which looks like this... please log in to view this image Now on to the final vote to complete the team, the front pair of strikers. This vote is the same as the one for the centre backs, you will be required to select TWO names from the list. If your pick is not in the shortlist, name him in the thread and I will count all the votes at the end.
Having a chat just last night with the missus Latvian workmate, where we both regaled each other with stories of little Marian... seems the Latvians have a soft spot for us Saints because of Marian... I shall never forget that goal against P*mpey and the celebration after.
Just to make the point that Ron Davies was, at his peak for us, regarded by no less a judge than Matt Busby as the finest centre forward in Europe, I have voted for him. Mick Channon, still our record scorer after all these years, is a given.
Damn, the missing R from last time has appeared in Marians Pahars name.. Can you change it please mods and put a capital on Saints in the poll title too?..cheers
In terms of impact to the team, that took us to the very top got two months, I could not look belong Keegan and Channon, I know Kev was only here for two seasons, and only really hit his straps for one of those, it put Southampton on tha map and laid the foundations for our relative success in the mid eighties
boy what a list, and again all worthy. I have gone for Channon and Lambert. Those who never saw Channon play just trust me......Lambert deserves it over the rest for the contribution in our rise back. Steve Moran is first reserve in my book. I never saw Ron Davies sadly and cannot believe Ali Dia is not in the the list!
With the best will in the world, though he did a good job for us, as a player Beattie isn't fit to lace the boots of a couple on that list.
Wow, this is hard. Some true legends here, plumped for channon and Moran but feel dirty for leaving out shearer, pahars, keegan and rickie. If crouch hadn't been so quick to scamper to Liverpool and stayed a bit longer, I think he could have made the list.
Although Phil Boyer was the first striker to have a real impact on me(along with Ted Macdougal) Channon will always be in the Saints hall of fame and Keegan was the best player I've seen ,put on a Saints shirt and was truly gutted when he left us.
Bloody hell this is hard for an old bugger. Some years ago I got tickets for Man U v Newcasle for my daughter and then boyfriend as a chrimbo present. Told them to watch Newcastle's number 9 - a living legend. Shearer had the lot. Of course Mick has to be there. Not an out and out striker, but in his own words "had a terrible 'abit of scoring 20 goals a year" and KK (at LFC at the time) described him the best player in Britain. Greatest Saint ever in my view. But then? Has to be Ron. Like Mick played in some **** teams and kept scoring. Imperious springs to mind. 4 at Old Trafford; 4 at Stamford Bridge; the winner at Elland Road when Leeds were the bollocks. One of the great strikers of all time.
Oh and Saints Alive ... I haven't followed your series of posts as avidly as I might, but brilliant idea. You will never settle the question of "greatest Saints team of all time" but a very good attempt. It's discussion like this that keeps me making my generally woeful old man ontributions. Suddenly realised that here is somewhere I can just spout off to lunatics who share the same obsession. Good on you, lad.
I'm so sorry mate, I know this breaks everything but... I went for Channon and Keegan. I'd have Ron on a 7 man bench in a heartbeat though. We have to have a subs bench. EDIT: F****** Lambert in front of KK.!?! Much as I like Rickie, he's a donkey compared to Keegan.
This thread ties in with the recent crop our outgoing protiges(spelling). How well did they do after they left us??? Likes of Boyer,Wallaces,Beattie didn't really set the world alight when off to better teams.! Times don't change, just the rewards!
Come on guys, Rickie will always be a Saints legend, but no way is he a better striker than big Ron or Keegan. I know people are basing their vote on the best they have seen, but please look at some stats and YouTube clips to check out the older players. Just a snippet: Ron Davies scored 43 goals in all competitions, 37 in the First Division, in his first season with Southampton. Kevin Keegan was the reigning European Footballer of the Year when he signed for Saints. I rest my case.
Jeez, I've just realised something. We are all **** and a disgrace to our club... .... Unless Bobby Stokes gets an automatic spot in the bench. I don't care who was better than him, he won us our only major trophy. Bobby Stokes, RIP
