Hi-de-hi, campers. Surprisingly nice card, across the county line, at Newbury tomorrow eve, and I’ll highlight a couple:

LA RIOJA (7.05) – my regular readers will recall that I tipped this filly first time up and she ran a very creditable race in defeat, at Lingers Park, beaten just half a length by a more experienced Hannon hotpot. La Rioja is sure to have learned a lot that day though and can be expected to be more the finished article here. Mr Candy’s barn is in good form, at the time of writing 6 of his last 18 have obliged (that’s 33% for those poor at maths), whilst he knows what it takes to win this heat having triumphed in the race 12 months ago. I think La Rioja can take this before stepping up in class.

NIGEL (8.40) – old boy Gosden’s charge really should break his duck here after a very near miss at Kempers Park last time. I know the family very well (Nigel’s that is not old boy Gosden’s). His dam, Deirdre, was Listed placed and he is a related to those very useful stayers Duncan (Irish St Leger winner) and Samuel (Doncaster Cup winner). Old boy Gosden won this race in ’14 whilst he’s another handler in decent form right now. Would be surprised if Nigel remained a maiden after this contest. Longer term he is just the sort of animal that those ‘jumping boys’ would love to get there hands on.

    Good luck all.

Epsom 615 jupitor storm 10s available and 3 places . Baker has pleny of experience on jupitor and the drop back in trip looks very positive whilst on a peach of a mark.

    Thank goodness Attivo is back.

Not much of a price but Machine Learner should win the second at Epsom.

    Epsom- 7.25 - Swiss Cross- 6/1

Seems to save his best for this track and course form is very important at a track like this. A few of the field have not raced here before so my guy will be experienced enough. Is 6lb lower than when winning this last year and looks to be trained for this race again!

    Lingfield 2.10 TOLEDO 9/2

Big, rangy 2 year old Excveed and Excel colt. Went off as stable first string at Windsor and pinged out from the wide draw to bag the rail AND the lead. He had everything off the bridle at the furlong pole but he paid the penalty for using up so much petrol early on and pulling for his head for half a mile.

If he pings the gate today he can look to dominate this when kicking for home round the bend.

To my eye untrained eye he looked a colt who could be above average and this is a maiden where he can score.

My Wimbledon outsider plays her 2nd round match today. Ekaterina Makarova (8th seed) backed at 66/1.

She has reached 3 Grand Slam quarter finals and 2 Grand Slam semi finals since 2012, losing in 3 sets to Serena Williams in the 2014 US Open semi having beaten Bouchard and Azarenka on the way.

She lost in 3 sets to Ana Ivanovic in the French 4th round- her best effort on clay to date- and that defeat prevented her from reaching a quarter final in every grand slam.

She is aggressive which you need to be on grass to topple the top few in the world so she will make some unforced errors along the way but that's the chance I'll take at the price!

I quite like this selection TC. He ran a belter on debut from a bad draw. Hughsie stopped riding at the end when his wining chance had gone but he could very definitely bully this field from the front and 9/2 is a fairly large price.

Afternoon all. Was bored at lunchtime so struck a speculative patent with those nice chaps at William Hill
    Heraldic 3-50 Haydock
    Bank of Gibraltar 4-10 Lingfield
    Well painted 4-40 Lingfield.

On a separate note I see that the rather delightful Victoria Pendleton takes to the turf in her debut race in a charity heat at Newbury this evening prior to the standard card. Not one to do anything by halves her ambition is to ride in the Foxhunters next year at Cheltenham. You have to admire her bottle.

Hard cheddar TC. Didn't really go your way throughout. Hughsie couldn't win the lead and i think he's probably run into one or two fair sorts.

The one i think may be worth a few quid today is Broughtons Bandit in the 3.30 at Perth. Gordon Elliott does terrifically well with his horses at the course. This ran poorly on handicap debut LTO but the race isn't working out too badly. 5/1 is worth a small little bit for interest.

The 4.20 Haydock has been made a lot easier for Dannyday with the defection of Hernandoshideaway. After finishing 2232 in his last 4 races, Polarisation is stepping up in trip which makes it more interesting but I would have thought being by Echo Of Light out of a Pivotal mare, 14f might be a bit far. Maybe he just doesn't have the finishing speed regardless of distance. Don't like taking odds on but the 10/11 on offer does look tempting (having missed the 20/21)
