He won't understand this (and not because of the typo). I can get lots of tickets for every Chelsea home game apart from the glamour games against Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs, United and, as of a few years ago, City. There are lots of season ticket holders who are rich enough to only use their tickets for the glamour games. They have no interest in the rest of the games and give the tickets away if anyone's interested. Often no one is. This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone, even the Chelsea fans as the reality is they have a limited "hardcore" support. That's always been the case. Winning trophies doesn't encourage the new fans to "waste" a Saturday afternoon watching Chelsea grind out a result against Burnley. Especially if there's rugby on at Twickenham.
I used to go to Stamford Bridge throughout the 80's as an away fan. Other than the place being an utter ****hole and Chelsea being a two bit yo-yo club, their hardcore support was limited. The Shed was full, but the stands were always half empty, even against Arsenal. I know they've bought some success since Roman has juiced them, but my opinion is that Chelsea are still not a big club. Certainly not on the same level as Arsenal, Utd, Liverpool etc They have been artificially propelled to the the top, like City, with the obscene amount of cash funnelled into them by rich sugar daddy, without which, they would still be hovering around mid-table with the odd league cup final appearance and the odd relegation battle here and there. Chelsea's success is arbitrary, Roman Abramovich was interested in buying Spurs before he decided to sink his millions into Chelsea. They are simply the beneficiaries of a huge cash injection from a foreign owner. Chelsea don't have the big support of a big club. They a small hardcore of genuine fans and large proportion of plastic fair weather fans, who flit between Football, Rugby, Shopping and the Opera.
Someone who is as old you and who used to go to every game home and away must surely remember that OT was being rebuilt in 1992/93 so the capacity couldn't have been much more than 35,000
Not like we decreased capacity to increase capacity and this filled ur ground to thr current maximum capacity... Oh... Wait...
Apart from when you got 33k v Newcastle two seasons ago http://www.manchestereveningnews.co...ealed-manchester-uniteds-old-trafford-2592078
Same with us in the late 90s when our capacity was 35k when we rebuilt west stand... Before we gained 6k glory hunters under Roman (actually our average was 40k when Bates was in charge so we gained 1k hunters) Your capacity was well over 50k in 89 when Fergie was manager but your average was in the late 30s.... So you've gained a lot of glory hunters but all fans gained fans post sky to be fair
The Arsenal usually get half decent gates for LC games but that's because tickets are priced at £5 for the lower tier & £10 for the upper tier
