My soon to be born child will never be christened. My partners family want it to be, they are not religion but it is a tradition for them. I laughed. Absolutely no chance of it happening.

A very interesting film I saw a few years ago regarding the flaws in most of the major religions and where they stole from each other. It's not 100% correct AFAIK but it's still worth a watch. I think about half of it is on religion and the other half is on conspiracy crap.

Exactly the stance I took with my daughter. My wife's family, my mother in law particularly, was upset that she wasn't christened. I am certainly not going to force any Christian belief on to my daughter, especially when I am not a Christian myself. If, as an adult, she wants to be a Christian and have herself Christened, she can have at it, but I certainly am not going to arrange and pay for that myself.

Where did Cain Get His Wife? by Matt Slick In Genesis 4:16-17 it says, "Then Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden. 17And Cain had relations with his wife and she conceived, and gave birth to Enoch; and he built a city, and called the name of the city Enoch, after the name of his son." Genesis tells us that Adam and Eve had two sons: Cain and Abel. Cain killed Abel, was exiled by God, and then in Genesis 4:17 we read that Cain had relations with his wife. Where did Cain get his wife? The answer is simple: Cain married either his sister or a niece. In Genesis 5:4 we see that Adam had other sons and daughters. "This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day when God created man, He made him in the likeness of God. 2He created them male and female, and He blessed them and named them Man in the day when they were created. 3When Adam had lived one hundred and thirty years, he became the father of a son in his own likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth. 4Then the days of Adam after he became the father of Seth were eight hundred years, and he had other sons and daughters. 5So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years, and he died," (Gen. 5:1-5). Since Adam lived several hundred years, having lots of children was not a problem. The Genesis account does not tell us about the order of the births, nor does it tell us how old they were. It was the ancient custom to often extract relevant information (sometimes out of order) to emphasize a point. By having many children, it is certainly possible that there were many women around. This would mean that Cain married a sister, niece, or some other relation, and their children had children, etc. Of course at this point, the question of inbreeding is raised. It was not a problem early on in the human race because the genetic line was so pure. Therefore, the prohibition against incest was not proclaimed until much later (Lev. 18:6-18) when inbreeding started to become a problem. This article is also available in: Português
Yes, if you have a christening, you generally have to pay to feed people and whatnot. Not sure if you have to pay to use the church though, like you do with weddings.

No you don't pay for the church but like with weddings you just make a donation if you want. That's my experience anyway. If you don't want a party to celebrate little ones arrival, that's each person's prerogative.
If you've ever studied ancient history, inbreeding is common practise. In lots of countries today, it's legal to marry your first cousin
Like the UK, isn't it? I get that. My question was more, what does "purity of the genetic line" mean, why does that reduce the problems involved in inbreeding, and why does that become a problem later on? Or is it making a point in terms of race/class etc. rather than health/genetics etc.?
My brother had my niece christened on the cheap, dont think it cost him much. But for me really, money isn't really the overriding factor, its forcing beliefs, beliefs that I dont even hold, on my daughter. I don't want religion to exist and wish for it to go, but not for one second would I FORCE any one to share my beliefs or lack thereof, I may try to educate them and see my point of view, but really letting everyone believe what they want is the way to go. Like racism, religion is becoming less and less prevalent as the world progresses. And it may take another couple hundred years, but it will soon die out.
