I'm sometimes envious of those who have a strong faith, as it provides them with an inner strength and belief system that helps them through the trials and tribulations of life, and ultimately facing up to death. Their faith sustains them and gives them something positive.

There's no doubt religion was used to control the masses, you couldn't really argue otherwise but in this day and age I'd say it's no more a social control than twitter and facebook - you can choose to participate or not. The other important thing to remember is that religion doesn't equate to faith.

 

If I remember rightly, the church are in a hard place, because they either agree its an act of god and pay out, or refuse to , and by extension, deny gods existence, so they arrange a bunch of religious nutcases to protest and harass him and picket his house and stuff and threaten his family so he withdraws the claim.

 

Some people can choose. Others cant. It costs them their life or family.

 

As someone who doesn't participate how can you possibly say that with any certainty? I do participate and I'm not doing it out of fear
