Apparently Van Gaal is "fuming" about not getting Clyne. Did they even make a bid? I would guess that Clyne would prefer Man U over Liverpool and we would prefer 15m over 10.5m + add-ons. So it's not like anyone pulled the rug out from underneath him. It was obvious to everyone in the whole world that they could have Clyne, and the price it would take.

Unless he thinks it is because Koeman wouldn't sell to him.

I'm guessing both. When the top four didn't come in at a time when he'd be at his cheapest (and when a couple of them could really use a right back), he'd be within his rights to think that pathway is all but closed off, at which point Liverpool becomes a more attractive option, and not just for the pay packet...he'll play there, whereas leaving on a free might well have ended up with him sitting on a bench as a token English player.
