Always said before that it wasn't a weak Derby and I expect the first 2 from Epsom will rack up a lot of G1s between them this season. I agree with you Joe, Golden Horn should win the Eclipse well enough. The French horse won't get anywhere near him, The Grey Gatsby who should have won at Ascot, will likely finish 2nd
What was Log Out Island even doing in Ireland today? Was practically murdered at Ascot 9 days ago and that race today has probably finished his season. Godolphin decision I think, dont think Hannon had this in mind before Ascot, the winner and 2nd are decent types though for this season at least..
We learned absolutely nothing from the Irish Derby. We already knew that Jack Hobbs was about five lengths better than Storm The Stars. The fact that Highland Reel ran no sort of race at all does not really help very much in assessing which of the two Derby winners is the best with a view to next week. Of course it could turn out that none of the three-year-olds are actually any good and one of the older horses might win the Eclipse. Bookmaker reaction has been fairly quick on OddsChecker. Golden Horn is now 8/11 (was available at 5/6 this morning) and New Bay is out to 4/1. The Grey Gatsby has shortened to 9/2 for some reason (perhaps someone has had a bet!).
So a horse can't run in 2 sprints in the space of 9 days? I don't agree with that at all. You get horses running over 3 miles+ and winning twice in a week all the time
We learned a lot actually, we learned that the English Derby form is likely a lot stronger than the French Derby and the Oaks form, which has to be a big positive for the form
You can run bad old horses 7 days a week and they will still be bad, seemed a strange move to me to run a potentially high class 2yo so soon after such a brutal experience on only his second start, 9 days later travelling to another country no less. Ill be surprised if he recovers. Was as easy to oppose as it gets for me today but unfortunately I overlooked Obriens who was no doubt the best horse but probably flattered by the margin of victory due to the way the race played out.
So steer clear of Legatissimo tomorrow because the 50/1 shot that beat her at Epsom was a one race fluke? And steer clear of Andre Fabre’s New Bay next week because the Prix Du Jockey Club runner-up will be in a Dublin supermarket lasagne by the end of the season? Fair enough...
It's easy to be wise after the event, though you don't know how a horse will respond until you try it. Buratino is an example of a 2 year old who's found huge improvements, from what some would call being overraced
13:34 "afterthought job for Log Out Island who got murdered in the Norfolk 9 days ago and now travelling here - MAX LAY" just wasnt wise enough to watch the winners maiden or I wouldnt have been so sure Rockaway Valley was a good thing.
Fair enough Joe, I only had the one bet today which was Jack Hobbs at evens. The 2yo races are always full of suprises this time of year, as there's little collateral form
It was as good an evens shot as you'll get, not very exciting but a good bet. El Viento was my NB after Rockaway! Its a boom or bust job though, but he will be going in again soon enough, hoping its tonight. Brooch 6/1 for the Pretty Polly I think is a class bet. Legatissimos Guineas form looks good after Ascot and the drop back to 1m2 will suit her, be hard to give her the weight but I think 6/1 is big.
Missed seeing the race but heard commentary in the car Shergs, sounded like he was impressive as you'd expect from an even money shot. In fairness a few were asking the Irish Derby to be declassified as recent as last year so they may argue that today was but a Grade One 'in name' I hope you got your Epsom losses back in spades anyway Shergy Not sure what it shows about the 3 year olds but that it raffirms the pecking order and that GOLDEN HORN sits atop of that pile very convincingly. It's all relative though, until they meet the elders it could be he's the best of a bad bunch but time will tell. DER KAISER was the man, he told us all about this lad, he knew! (Shame he thinks Epsoms in Scottyland though based on his 'our Derby' comment but that's another story )
United Kingdom beefy! Its MY Derby. The 3yos seem to be doing ok, albeit at a lower level so far, personally I dont think there is any older horse around in the same class as Golden Horn or Gleneagles. Treve and Solow but id take the 3yos to have them both.
New Bay and Golden Horn are very similar actually in profile. Both with good speed, good turn of foot, both with stamina questions around breeding, but both answering them. Both beating below average classic crops. Grey Gatsby will provide a very tough adversary IMO as his collateral form from last year looks very nice, especially as he ties in with Australia and Free Eagle- especially giving the latter weight at Ascot.
