Firstly, Fonte's been better this season for me regardless. He won the vote for player of the season by a mile. It's intriguing because that you actually made that thread and listed your top three for the season. Why does Alderweireld get your vote in an all-time Saints eleven, despite Fonte being player of the season for you in the only season Alderweireld has played for us? Fonte was my player of the season for all sorts of reasons. He stayed when he could have gone. He became Captain and led the team like a Captain should. He said great things off the pitch and he has had a fantastic season. He steadied our ship off the pitch and on it. He played a lot more than Toby. Fonte improved again. His contribution to our season was greater than any other player in my opinion. This does not mean I think he is our best player. This made me think he was most worthy of player of the season. How hard is that for you to figure out. None of the above mean that I think he is a better player than Toby. I think Toby is the better player. I think Toby is one of the best defenders I have seen in a long time here. The arrogance of your "My work here is done" line sort of sums you up when you post. Why don't you try and have a debate like lots of people do? Surely you can see that a player can be better than another player but not contribute as much to a season, or is thinking outside of straight lines beyond you. This whole little episode has stemmed from your inability to communicate well with people. You threw the line about fans not being loyal and how you couldn't believe that people felt Toby was a better player than Fonte despite the five years Fonte has given us.... and why? .... all because some people had a different opinion to yours. Seriously, please come back and debate it sensibly. It is an opinion that is all and in your desperation to try and undermine my view, you tried to lay some evidence that contradicted my view without really thinking about that other view, simply because it was different to yours. I still think Fonte has been player of the season. I still think Toby is a better player.
Fonte & Claus are interesting cases, both are long term servants of the club and both have formed more than one successful defensive partnership where they were widely regarded as 2nd best (Lovren/Alderweireld) - (Richards/Svensson) Perhaps it's because there style of defending is not as dramatic or commanding as others
Any one who has watched super Ken should put him in. Not sure why Toby is on the list as he is not our player. Surprised Jim Steele is not one of the ten either. Had to go for Claus as well but hard call as Fonte is immense. We have been well served by good CBs.
Again, I've only seen a couple of them play regularly - Lundekvam, Svensson (for the 4 games or so in the Portvliet era), Toby and Jose. As good as Toby is, I wouldn't vote for him, as he'd only been here a season, and Svensson was past his best, and not really recovered from his injury when I saw him, so Jose and Claus it is!
Well if it's any comfort, Fonte, along with Killer, looks like he will be in the all-time Saints XI, which is absolutely fine by me. I'm not going to start questioning other people's mentality or loyalty just because they voted for someone different from me. Jose was close behind Toby in my view anyway, so fair enough, I'm happy. But then if you're not coming back to the forum you'll never find out who won, so what was the point in all the drama?
I think Fonte won the best player award for more than just ability as a CB...his leadership, loyalty, consistency, and being a general all-round good guy. Sometimes you don't just choose the most talented player, other factors are considered.
Fonte and Killer for me, the fact that Fonte has risen through the league's and improved each time shows how good he is.As for Killer, a quality player who could've played for a bigger team if it wasn't for his injury.
