I could live with anything - I mean ANYTHING - in the world of football other than exclusive purchase of all our best players by Liverpool and Spurs. This is truly torture. I would take 17th place in the Prem to ensure Toby went anywhere else but Spurs. Why give these clubs the satisfaction? Such a crap message to send every year. Finish in close proximity to us and you can poach our best three or four players every single year.

Don't get worked up by the article - it's the treadmill of journalistic rehash. That story has come out of 3 places now without a leg to stand on other than "oh, 2 Belgians, that'll do".

The other thing being, Pochettini would be an utter buffoon if he wasn't looking at Alderweireld.

I still think we will get him. And for less than 18m (if you include the money AM won't have to pay us).

It was something I alluded to some time back Pelletron, but my reasoning was pooh-poohed. I suggested that by luring our best players away the direct rival teams do two things. 1] They improve themselves and 2] attempt to disrupt us. It's the transfer version of a 6 pointer match. It misfired last year, but they're more than willing to try it again, if we let them.

If I recall correctly, you were pooh-poohed because you hinted that a team like Chelsea would do that to us.

The counter argument would be that we have the opportunity to improve our squad with the money received.

e.g. Selling potential for players who are better now. Bertrand for Shaw. Then still having money left to strengthen.

Our greatest weakness over the last couple of seasons has not been our first eleven, but our strength in depth.

Obviously I hope we can sign Toby, but it looks like we've sold Morgan & Clyne for 36m
With that money we've already added two players and hardly dented the money received. We're linked with two midfielders who will compete to replace Morgan and rival Steven Davis and we have change for a second right back.

So the depth issues in the squad have been covered by selling two players and bringing in five(not counting Steklenberg)
If we sign Toby then that's a decent window.
If we had kept Morgan & Clyne and signed Toby, then we probably would not have had the budget to add as many faces and we would be stuck with the same depth issues and more matches.

The only danger is that the replacements are not up to task, but we shall see

Because we finished 2 points behind Liverpool last season does not make them our "direct rivals" ffs.

They will be one of the teams we are trying to overtake to improve on last season's position, so in what way are they not our direct rivals?

Ok by that logic all the teams who finished behind us are our direct rivals in their eyes, do you agree with that?

Some of them yes of course, we'll have to see what the relative squad strengths are like when the window closes but certainly West Ham, Everton, and Swansea, and possibly Newcastle if they get Austin. You and I may have different views on what constitutes rivalry but I can't agree with you if you think that just because a club is "bigger" and has a more illustrious history than us we can't rival them for league position. We did last season after all, taking points of all the teams above us apart from Man City and Liverpool.

Of course we can rival them for a league position from time to time, as last season proved, but wouldn't consider them our rivals. Swansea/West Ham I would and if we finish above them again then we will have had a good season. Everton will be far better next year now they have no European football and I would be happily surprised if we finish above them again (as I think that would mean that we are at least 7th).

Yes, but I made the separate point that direct rivals would do it.

With our financial position, infrastructure, academy (Swansea's development team is two divisons below ours) and an extra 10k average crowd, it could be said that the Swans are unlikely rivals to us, but they're unequivocally are ours rivals. With Liverpool's current travails we were unlikely rivals last season, and thus there is a potential rivalry there for next season; which must be said appears to hinge for both clubs to a tangible degree on this transfer window. The immediacy and current flux of these situations, rather than stolid heritage and pedigree makes for uniquely exciting times for Saints.

Agreed. Tradition used to be something. Today it is nothing. We bow to no club and I wouldn't expect any club to bow to us.
