Ivan for me. Look for his goal on YouTube at the Dell against WBA I think. Pure class. We won 2-0 and he scored the first (circa 1982?). Made Clyne vs Arsenal in the Capital cup look like a training ground goal :)

Here it is..I'm old than I remember :) Feb 1981

As much as I live Doddsy, he was not a great player. Solid, loyal and a crowd favourite, but this is supposed to be about 'best'

Any younger viewers voting for him because they haven't seen others should show some balls and select Clyne even if he is leaving as he's head and shoulders above Doddsy.

Please someone vote for Rodrigues; it's only right.

I was there that day,and was and probably still is my favourite goal. The timing and power in that shot was perfection. TV does not do it justice.

I'm glad you mentioned that, as I've just posted about him in 'the best left back' category. I thought the old grey cells were playing tricks for a minute?

I voted for Ivan Golac, great signing by Big Mac, I remember him as one of the first real overlapping full backs that loved to get forward and have a go a goal.

M Svennson, Fonte, Schniederlin and Le Tissier are forgone conclusions, so are we skipping these categories?

    http://www.worldfootball.net/player_summary/steve-mills/

These quotes from Wiki say also he was a Right Back

    From Peter Rodrigues' page
"Rodrigues was signed on a free transfer by Southampton at the age of 30 in 1975, after being released from his contract by Sheffield Wednesday. The Welsh international full-back was signed by Lawrie McMenemy as cover for Steve Mills"

    From Steve Mills' page
"He was extremely quick and a fierce tackler – a natural right-back".

I think that most people would agree that Matt Le Tissier is the greatest Saints player, therefore I think it is pointless to have a vote in his position.

If the two leading candidates remain level in the poll, I will have the deciding vote as I already voted for someone different.

Golac. I'd never seen a fullback play like him, I remember some old buggers in the crowd shouting for him to stay back and defend during his first couple of games. They were soon converted.

Served him a beer in the old Dell players lounge, wife was almost as scary as Ivan running with the ball.

You're 31 Clem yes? That'll explain why you have those as forgone conclusions....

Chris Nicholl, Mark Wright, Steve Williams, ... Just to throw in some alternatives for you on the first three. Il agree now on MLT. :)

The older buggers on here can throw in a CB from the 60's to prove my point.

John McGrath. Maybe not the best, but definitely the hardest.

There is no doubt that "old bugger" is a term of endearment :)

No one went for Kirkup then!

I surprised Mills hasn't got more votes to be honest. He was a modern full back if ever there was one.

Golac for me though, although I am beginning to fall into the trap of 'favourite' rather than necessarily 'best'.

It was inevitable. Eventually reason had to get its way. Much as I loved Doddsy, Golac was head and shoulders the better player. Very skilled. Good, calm defender. Brilliant wide anchor to midfield when needed, and bonus of all bonuses, a genuine wingman with pace. Could get caught upfield enjoying himself too much occasionally, but we all loved him for his swashbuckling style. You just can't leave him out.
