Blimey, Greece is about to announce an EU referendum, for next Sunday. What a strange day.

Who knows. Just feels like we've had 2 months worth of news in about 12 hours. One of those American escaped murderers got killed and an Alton Towers crash victim got her leg amputated, by the way.

The two term rule came in after FDR.

On Greece, think they should leave the Euro.

No it didn't. George Washington, the first president, established the rule and it ran until FDR's second term, when Congress amended the rule so he could run for a third term in 1940, and then a fourth in 1944. He died shortly after his fourth inauguration in 1945, and they changed the rule back for subsequent presidents.

OK, fair enough, that set the rule in stone, but it was a convention observed by all presidents up until Roosevelt.

On Greece, the EU wouldn't have to pay the debt but a lot of it is owed to the EU or EU countries so they'd suffer a bit. Having said that, I would think some of the debt will be written off at some point whether or not Greece leave the euro.

I believe that basically Greece would leave and go back to the drachma, which would be massively devalued. The Greek government would find it impossible to borrow money for years but the drachma being devalued would make Greek exports much cheaper and they'd probably recover slowly. Greece would probably be better off outside the euro but it might kill the euro and could potentially change the EU enormously, not that those are necessarily bad things.

Regardless of whether you agree with them or not, it's pretty disgraceful that the democratically elected government of Greece are close to not being able to enact the policies the people of Greece voted for.

An amendment. As Jim Jeffries recently reminded us, it's just an amendment. It can be changed. :)

Oh dear, I've started playing records. How about this [James Gang - Thirds} for something a little bit obscure. Walk Away has just finished:

The biggest benefit of the Greeks having a devalued drachma would be a huge increase in tourism, which is their biggest asset. That in itself would speed recovery enormously.

I was a big supporter of the Euro when it was introduced but I have to admit it has failed.

I just don't get Florence I'm afraid. I'd rather see that lass from Brighton at the Pyramid, what's her name again....?

Ha! Me too mate, me too. It'll happen. One of Amy Winehouse's mates was at her gig on Wednesday and said that "she's right up there with Amy, and I've never said that about anyone before".

Part of the problem the EU has with defaulted Greek debt is entirely the fault of the EU. If they had stuck to their original criteria for membership and adoption of the Euro, then Greece among others would never have been able to join the single currency. By continually relaxing those criteria to enable weàker economies to adopt the Euro, they are now reaping what the sowed.

Sorry to cheapen the conversation but I have to admit to putting the Electric Light Orchestra's Greatest Hits on. [I can't say ELO :)]. Loads of memories came flooding back when Evil Woman started belting out. It was pure The Cowherds [Pub] on a Thursday or Friday Night, trying to get off with a woman or getting hammered with my best mate. That pub jukebox was always playing something. Art for Art's Sake - 10cc was hugely popular. If someone didn't manage to partner off with somebody they would put on I'm Not In Love, so inevitably it was the last thing on before time. In fact, 10cc was so popular on that jukebox that I ended up buying The Original Soundtrack. Not the first thing I'd buy in the record shop, but they were a clever bunch and they appealed to me as a change of pace. Might put that on next.
