Surprised to see a negative thread from this. 8 Million on its own is an incredible deal for Mings. Pitman and Fraser become two complte risk free new signings. Also Warky, last season was the first time since before the ME era we made the play-offs - so by definition we're actually into moving forward territory now. Parr at LB, Clarke developing as his understudy for the season. two new attacking players, I fail to see the negative in this deal. It's even less risky than selling Cressy last year.
I can't understand the obsession with cashing in on our best players and being delighted we've made x amount of profit on what we paid for him.The only person who will benefit is Evans. It doesn't matter to me if we were offered £800k or £8million for Mings, the money won't be used to buy a better player(Mings is not as good as Cressy, and if Parr is seen as the ''obvious'' replacement for Tyrone then we've traded down again!) The reason I'm cheesed off (you're right there Warky!)is that we've lost a player I found genuinely exciting, and believe me they're few and far between in our present squad. And another thing had it not been part of the Mings deal would we even have been interested in Fraser or Pitman, bearing in mind one of them is only a loan deal?
In an Ideal world we would have kept hold of Mings, but we're not in that position. I dont understand the persistent accusation of Evans pocketing money, "Transfers" is not the only thing on the expenditure side of the budget - even if it was im fairly sure he's put more in than he's made. We have worked out/found/stumbled upon a model that has worked for us over the past few seasons. That's what we're continuing with. Remember just a few years ago we were letting players walk out the door and weakening our squad without any compensation. If "trading down" means a stronger squad as it proved last season then i'm all for it.
Whatever you feel about Mings what we need to remember here is that this happens every season end.....good players who shine in the championship usually end up moving to prem clubs, for better or worse. We all sort of knew this was going to happen, let's just hope that MM is allowed to reinvest that fee into the team for our push forward for the coming season.
I guess we should judge this move in context of our overall transfer business this window. After all, McCarthy was told by Evans that he'd be limited to just freebies and loanees this window, according to the EADT, so by selling Mings, I guess McCarthy sees it as getting a bit of money to invest elsewhere in the squad. Hopefully he has targeted a right-back and a couple of midfielders. As a few of us on here have mentioned already, £8m, and the two players, is a massive profit and a couple of options in attack. I know I'm sounding like a stuck record over the past few days, but we need to invest that money. We cannot rely on cast-offs from other clubs to push this club forwards and, as most of us on here have acknowledged, we punched above our weight last season with an average squad (on paper). McCarthy obviously has his eyes on a few targets that costs money, otherwise why would he sell Mings and go back on that PR guff coming out of Portman Road earlier that said we 'wouldn't sell our best players'? I trust in him to identify the right players.
We have just left Garrido go. He could do a good job for you in the Championship if you grab him quick before he moves out of the area.
I don't think we over achieved ..I feel we were under estimated.....but I'm sure that MM said at the start of last season that the play offs were the target which we achieved. If Mick thinks the players we need can be picked up on a free then I have no problem...I don't understand the obsession with having to spend millions, I want good players not big price tags.
I'm happy with this deal. It's obvious we need to make a big sale to improve the squad overall. Good luck Tyrone and welcome to the new boys. Like Weighty, I don't think we did more than we should of last season, we did exactly what we were capable of and finished sixth.
Always was Weighty read my OP! http://www.not606.com/threads/take-the-money-for-mings-and-run.304028/
It reads to me like you had doubts tbh guv......the ? after 'good deal' leaves me thinking you think it's a poor move. The more I see and read I think it could be a great deal for us..........how would you feel if we had just spent 8mil to bring in Mings???
