Right, now it's the turn of the Left Backs and we have certainly had some great ones! Here is the team so far ( I have chosen LeGod as ACM as a given!).... please log in to view this image [/IMG] please log in to view this image As before, if you come up with a name that is not on the list, just name him in the thread and I will count them at the end.
It can only be Mark Dennis. An incredible left back. Just a shame his middle name was "red mist" Two wonderful memories for me: 1. The run and cross for that goal against Liverpool for Danny Wallace's overhead kick. 2. The punch that put Peter Withe down (or maybe a head butt)
Mark Dennis all the way. I'm amused at 'redandwhite' voting for Franny. Wholehearted, committed, hard, fast.........but he was never terribly good (bless him).
I think some people confuse "best" with "favourite" It was a shame that Dennis and Franny didn't over lap in time... We could have played Franny LM in front of Mark Dennis or vice versa ... teams would have stopped playing a right side completely.
I must add to this poll that if we did this in say another season or two's time, I do wonder if I may select Mr Bertrand. I think he is excellent and could yet prove to be one of the best deals we've done.
I've just re-looked at the list as first time, I just zoomed in on Mark Dennis's name. Micky Adams in and no Jeff Kenna? Wow.
Bridge for me. Bale wasn't here long enough and Bridge was my favourite player as a kid. And he was an excellent left back.
Even though he hardly played for us, I don't think you can look past bale. How many other saints players in history are at Real Madrid's level? Although it depends if we're judging on ability, or what they achieved for us.
Well I thought of him when we did the RB slot, but in my head I had him as a right footed Left Back with Doddsy on the other side????? Which one of our memories is slipping the most?
And if it's not about when he played for us, then he's not a left back! It has to be for the time they were with us.
Tom, did you see him play for us? That "kid" almost single handedly dragged us into the Premier League and had it not been for that thug Billy Davis, he may well have done. I didn't pick Bale as my choice, but he was incredible for that one season as a 17 year old. I remember being at one game and it was almost embarrassing how every player seemed to try to give the ball to Bale and sit back while he went off on a run.
If we are talking about performances for Southampton then Bale shouldn't be getting your vote. If we are talking about their whole career then you can't vote Bale in as left-back as that isn't where he plays most effectively. I think some people are just being blinded by the 'big name' here.
Yeah, he was incredible at that age. But what I am saying is that you can't compare him then to what he's doing now - for one thing he's no longer a left back!
