He's promised investment and to give it a real go in the cups but do you think he'll back up his words with deeds?

I actually think he will, although we will see one or two departures to further balance the books.

Balancing the books would mean signing 5 with no-one leaving the club.

    This.

We need to define our terms. I think we will sign a goodish striker, a goodish CB and 3 midfielders of speculative quality. No one we really mind about leaves. Net spend £30 million.

That would leave us with a small squad but potentially capable of finishing 9th.

McLaren will not be ordered not to compete in the cups.

The club will say that is delivering. Some will disagree.

I think Ashley has laid it bare. I think it's Lee Charnley who will fail to deliver. Joe Kinnear fcked about with transfers and we saw his fate, I can only hope and pray Charnley goes the same way and that we actually employ a "football person" when his time finally and belatedly comes.

I think he will, but I think people are mis-quoting him regarding his interview. He said he's not leaving until we win a cup, that doesn't mean he's going to plough 60m in each window until we win one.

We're also not going to suddenly abandon our current "plan" of selling if a bid deemed high enough comes in. For example I could see us spending 40m and getting two strikers, a CB and a wide midfielder but then on the last day if a bid of 20m came in for Moussa or 12m for Krul I think we'd sell and people would see that as going back on his word.

In short I'm confident we'll do enough to obtain a squad capable of finishing top ten (not top 8) and we'll attack at least the FA Cup with our strongest available team.

We'll spend a lot, but it's all a bit too late really. I wont be suddenly impressed if we spend 40-50m. It doesn't even make up for previous bs.

I don't know where the confidence comes from but it's admirable. I agree we'll play a full strength side in the FA Cup but that's only what we should have been doing every season for the past 100 years, it should attract no praise.

I'm very fearful. I don't think we'll have signed anyone of note before the Fans Forum meeting on the 7th July, truth be told. In my opinion, and I admit I could be proven well wrong in the coming months, Lee Charnley is way more inept and useless than anyone gives him credit for. He decided on Carver, given a few better results he probably would have kept Carver. He decided not to spend in January, it's his signature on the loan deal for Santon. He was the guy in charge when Facundo Ferreyra rocked up, it's his signature on the cheque for £12m Remy Cabella. If it's somehow NOT his fault, why isn't he changing what Graham Carr is doing, moving him to a different role? I struggle to understand why you would employ someone who kept failing you, therefore perhaps Carr ISN'T the problem. In fact, Carr remains silent. Pardew remained silent. Moncur will not speak out. McClaren? We'll see, but he's been given a Premier League job after being sacked in the Championship, yet another job offer to someone who'll be "eternally grateful"? Charnley plays the politics very well. But our FD left for an airport, his assistant went to Manchester City, and neither have been replaced.

I'm just not sure, GCB, where the cautious optimism comes from as I fail to understand how anyone sane would apportion hope to Lee Charnley who has shown nothing but pi$$-poor judgement and ill-conceived management since coming to power.

Its all about the money money money

Fat Mike made that pledge when he was shoite scared about relegation. Now that you are safe for another season and you have a manager with an IQ in double figures, the pledge will be forgotten

No in short. I think his interest is in making money out of us, investing in us is not really going to further that.

Ashley did promise to spend, whether it was inferred or otherwise. No point trying to dress it up any other way. In his interview, he said something along the lines of they had the club on sound financial footing and were now in a position to punch well above our weight in terms of what we spend. He used the word relative I think. He also stated his target was to win something and included reaching the CL as qualifying under that umbrella.

So when we are talking about what we invest each window, we have to go back to what he said in that interview (though I still think he was pissed). He was promising to spend big money. All the other clubs will spend big. If we are then going to be punching well above that or trying win/qualify for CL, then we are going to spend massive.

I understand what you're saying GCB, don't get carried away etc. Bottom line is though he has come out and made promises. He now has to stand behind them. Does that mean 60m? I don't know what the figure is. However it means a net spend of upwards of 30-40M at the very least given the current state of our squad. There is no hiding from that. We are minimum of 6 players short (probably more). In terms of quality, you have to pay big sums of money - i.e. 4 10m players - you've blown a massive ****ing hole in your budget. That's what we have to commit to if he is going to be true to his word.

The guy is a total w@anker.

Best of luck getting rid of the fat prick. He's at NUFC to coin it in and it's working.

I wouldn't trust a word that comes out of Ashleys mouth. I will have to see the official team photo to believe we have gotten anyone over the line.

I think Mike leaves it basically up to Charnley. If he was any good at his job I think he would be able to get Mike to put his hand in his pocket for the right players.

Nah. I think coming so close to relegation has made him realize that we need better players, but I can't see him aiming for more than mid-table safety. I reckon NUFC is just part of his business empire and so, while he does't want relegation because it would cost big money, he's quite happy with the job it does for him a SD unitied at around the middle of the table.

I hope I'm wrong about this, but it's hard to see why he'd start really caring now.

We have got ourselves into a situation where players are going to question our ambition. I reckon we need to at least try and go big. Some kind of headline signing. Having said that even if Mike was prepared to fork out its easier said than done.

This puts it far better than I could...The biggest problem NUFC have is structural, the board, coaches...and a long way down the list of problems is the players ( useless that they may be). Without addressing these fundamental structural problems you can chuck whatever limited amount of cash the fat controller is willing to part with...and nowt will change.

Personally iam stunned at the sheer ineptitude and incompetence of the board and particularly Charnley. In his short time on the board he has proved himself the oerfect example of bland grey faced middle manager promoted to his level of incompetence, time and time again. ..from Carver through to appointing a manager and coaches and onto loans and player selling.

Doing the same thing over and over again in the expectation of a different result is a definition of Insanity.

Short answer to the question...Nope, not a cats chance in hell . It's not really just about the money ..it's about the incompetence, ineptitude, lack of vision and basic professionalism that is embedded throughout Nufc
