I remember those temporary floodlights in '52. They weren't up for long, being replaced at the end of that season. God, they looked frail. When a strong wind came off the sea, they used to rattle and we were always terrified they were going to collapse! I don't remember the first floodlit game - I don't think you could play league games under them at that time. The first time I went to see them working was in Feb., '54 - a friendly against Hibernian. I think Sunderland were only the second English league ground to have floodlights, after Highbury.
Can't stand Dyer but Geoff Bell is a wicked actor. More talent in his little finger then Dyer has in his body. But Geoff Bell is a fat old ugly **** so doesn't fit the wincing 'so cockney it hurts' heartthrob role Dyer gets.
If you have never seen that movie, i reckon it'll be right up your street.. They had everything, and a free role to sell as much weed as they liked...but
Some truly great photo's there thanks to all concerned, made my day, and one of them features my abode.
Fantastic photographs but how dated do they look? Even the ones from the 80's and 90's look like old Pathe news reports. Lol
