    I don't like the fact that people [anywhere] eat dogs and cats, but they do and I can't do anything about it. This thread is about a festival created to celebrate eating dog and that's abhorrent to me. If they're having a festival for it, they're doing it to draw attention to it. If they're bold enough to draw attention to eating dog, I'm bold enough to say what I think about it.

    There's also the public health matter: most dog meat traders aren't vaccinated for rabies, they are passing on 'meat' for human consumption that isn't checked for contamination or infection because they have no idea of the source: Guangxi [where the festival is held] is among the five top provinces in terms of the number of human rabies cases in China.

    Activists started going to Yulin in great numbers in 2012. Animal rescue volunteers also attend. One of them said in interview ''We’re likely to see extortion against the rescue people as happened last year, when dog meat traders brutalized dogs in order to fetch high prices from the rescue people.'' That's shameful by any standards and anyone thinking the uproar over this is merely an excuse to have a go at China, needs to think again.

    Seeing as I posted this my thoughts are that if people want to eat dogs and it's legal then fine it's up to them however the animal should be treated well while alive and slaughtered humanely. There is no excuse for this festival where cruelty seems to be rife. I wouldn't eat dog meat myself or cat for that matter but that's just my thing, just doesn't seem right.

    I will probably get the 'excuse for having a go at China' comment here but anyway ......... in a country that has an appalling record on human rights, it's hardly surprising that they're lagging behind in terms of animal rights!

    It might also be worth pointing out that opposition to eating dog, began with the Chinese themselves.

    I personally wouldn't eat dogs but I've been known to eat a few pussy's down the years.

    You obviously don't know much about the UK and human rights record other than the fictional version <ok> Within UK borders yes, outside of UK borders, an appalling record. I could really go to lengths to show you how that is so not true.

    Animals rights? yeah the ones you like to not eat, the ones we eat are treated appallingly.

    It wasn't a comparison with our country or any other country. Pointing out someone else's appalling behaviour, isn't denying your own!

    I stated a fact, correct me if it's wrong.

    It is true yes. If you had said "China has a human rights record to parrallel our own" I'd have have let it go :bandit:

    But the selectivity on animal rights I must say is misguided. If we think they are nice and not food they get rights, if they look tasty, then no.

    I don't think that's either fair or accurate.

    We're not perfect, far from it, but the food industry is well regulated and conditions / standards are constantly improving, driven by both legislation and consumer demand.

    In comparison to China? behave mate will yer. They'd slaughter and fry off a ****ing chimp at the roadside over there.

    <ok>

    It's a bit more complex than that though, which you know. Emptying a van load of 1,000 dogs, several hundred of which have pet collars on and killing them inhumanely as some sort of 'celebration' should make any rational, reasonable person flinch in disgust, if it doesn't I worry for the future of humanity.
    Kindness and compassion is supposed to be what sets us apart, lose that and we may as well be wild animals ourselves.
