first time I went in Henry's a woman was giving a bloke a blow job in the first booth we passed, and in the next they were doing lines off the table. happy days. winner stays on!
I have a recolection of a club called Sombrero somewhere in Hull but can't find a mention of it anywhere so unless someone can shed any light on this place it will remain a mystery to me.
What I remember about Henry's is the stink of paraffin as soon as you walked in.....oh and counting the steps as I hit every one of the buggers after being twatted.
The average Saturday in Shire or Cheese was more dangerous than most of the places mentioned in the article.
I remember when Hull Cheese opened - it think it used to be called Paragon with a bar called the Chicken Run
I visited quite a few places mentioned in this thread but although I knew their reputations I just wanted a good night out so any hint of trouble and I was out of the door as I didn't want my face re-arranging I'm ugly enough as it is.
The first dozen or so times I ever went in Cheese as a whippersnapper I saw a fight, some of them pretty brutal. They then introduced plastic "glasses" - surely they need a better name? - and it seemed to help a bit. I used to go in Shire a lot but dont think I ever saw it kick off.
My main memory of them, is that mid afternoon on a Saturday, they had music louder than your average nightclub and that at Cheese it was a nightmare trying to get anywhere near the bar. The glass used to fly a lot in there and as you say they switched to plastic glasses, though I think that was mainly driven by the fact that it was so full half the people there were outside on the street.
Baileys nightclub in 1973 / 4 ish - I was glass collector / plastic - I remember one guy getting another in a headlock and hitting him on the head with a glass and wondering why it wouldn't break - pint of Tartan which was code for pint of well watered down bitter
I miss the Room, saw a lot of indie bands in there, Catatonia and Cerys stands out a bit as they were big at the time, saw quite a few big name house/trance/techno DJs there too, fairly sure Tiesto played there before he was massive, used to like Fez Club similarly because they had an amazing sound system there and all the big trance DJS came for Eat Your Words and Fully Charged when that stuff was massive, was a mini Hull Gatecrasher
Wednesday night rock night for me. Think I first went at about 17, then it changed to Attic and the strip club and the rock night moved to Pozition. It wasn't the same. I remember a particularly drunken new year in there once, and slipping down the steps in the back room to hand the DJ requests. Happened lots if times.
I was at that gig. Also saw Kenickie, Babybird, Olive, Smaller, Tiger, Audioweb and shedloads of others than I cant recall right now. There was a period when Room was great for touring bands.
What was the place called behind Hull College? Looked like a really nice town house that had been converted for several uses and eventually a club. Remember getting plastered there, early 80s I think, going to leave and tumbling all the way down the ornate stairs - battered. Door staff checked I was breathing then helpfully ushered me onto the street - no ****ing around with first aid in those days.
If you are referring to what was a pub on the opposite side of the cobbled street then I think it was called The Bounty it was more or less next to a dry dock.
