    Answer my own question.

    I'm guessing
    30m Shaw
    20m Lovren
    4m Lambert
    16m Chambers
    20m Lallana
    3m Cork

    93m in

    10m Forster
    12m Mane
    12m Tadic
    8m Pelle
    12m Long
    10m Betrand

    64m out

That's 29m as a starting point. Even if you remove a generous 9m to allow for sell ons and appearance based fees still to be paid then we have £20m as a starting point

I dislike the idea of people offsetting £1.5 M against Tony. It's irrational.

We get £1.5M from Atletico. We need to spend that as wisely as possible. If that happens to be on Toby, so be it, but the £1.5M can't be taken into account when you work out how much Toby will cost. You have to deal with it just as "money in".

Money in last season also went towards covering wages of the new signings. The board will spend what they can afford to spend. We're in good hands.

I'm less confident...he doesn't give the impression of challenging for Bertrand's spot yet. But youth team watchers will know better than me.

This is true, but we also lost wages too with a few going.

Given Bertrand's seemingly impressive durability I'd say he's a perfectly suitable backup. Certainly it would be rediculous (given all the talk about pathways and pathway blockers) to sign another one.

Think about it, if we signed one, where does that leave Targett? Or Wood/Debayo or any of the kids dabbling at fullback in the academy? They'd be in similar to Bertrand's postion when he was a Chelsea player. I don't want us to be that kind of club.

Agree to disagree on this one FLT. We had a deal at £6.3m agreed unless they bought the option back. They've rightly bought the option back, but we're now paying £16.5m net which is over £10m more (or over 2 and a half times) what it was before.

Sure, what I'm saying is, the net transfer profit from last year can't be looked at as cash in hand that we should be spending this window. The Krugster was very specific in mentioning that a portion of the profits would cover the wage of the new signings.

We really don't have very much of an idea how much the club plans to spend, or how much of that is tied up in (un)expected sales like Schneiderlin and Clyne. No one has a bloody clue!

And that's probably the way it should be. :)

The club had faith in him to be second choice last season.

Finances and our pathway mean we have to have faith in our youth players.
I don't think we will buy another striker. We might go for Guidetti on a free or try a loan potentially, but can't see us spending serious money

That's irrelevant now though. That was us trying a very clever deal and would have worked if Toby hadn't had a good season. AM have called the bluff in that deal by paying the cancellation clause. Now it's about his market value.

You yourself said 10-12m is ok (I think) as you felt 18m was too high. I am not far away from you by saying I think that "known" factor is worth the extra.

What I haven't see you offer is an alternative at 10-12m that would, or could, be as good as Toby had been.

Well, that's the big conundrum. But we shouldn't underestimate how much Europa is going to add to our season. Really it depends on our targets with a small t - top 10 and Europa group stages, we can have a good tilt. Much more than that and we're taking some risks. If Targett is playing 15 games next season, and we're not getting a drop off in quality (and leaving Bertrand out of some midweek trips to *****lia) then I'll be happy.

I'd have bought Fabian Schär nice and early in the window before Hoffenheim did for c. £4m and we'd have 4 CB's now. I'd then wait and see what options transpired for best spending our money, whether that be Alderweireld and then selling one of Yoshida or Gardos, or spending it on a top notch striker. I wouldn't be getting held to ransom and then just paying it because I'm so set on having to have one specific player, or not having 4 CB's in the squad come opening day. Each to their own, I'm happy we both understand each other's opinion.

I can see Targett being used more this season. I have been on about him for over a year now. He will score a few free kicks for us this season.

Rodgers said we had financial plans for all eventualities, including being in Europe. That can only mean that extra money would be available if we were in Europe. Not saying that it will be a massive sum, but some should be available.

That is good. I'm guessing Ron is happy to start the season with them two then? Also any chance of Harrison getting some more games?

Regards the value of the 'known' part, I look at it kind of like the difference between the £6.3 we originally agreed for Toby, or could spend on another similar profile CB and the £12m I said I'd be happy with is that premium. If we spent £18m it'd be like asking am I happy with spending £11.7m for that premium (£18m-£6.3m), not just £5-6m.

But I just don't think you are right to use the 6.3. That was us trying it on for a player who hadn't played much for his team. You have to discount that unless you truly believe his value is 6.3m. If you do then we live on different planets :)

I believe his unknown value before we tried him out was c. £6.3m, and his known value now is c.£12-15m. I believe if we pay £18m then we're overpaying for a player that I reckon has a known value that's £3-6m less than the price we're paying.

Minor details. I'll be happy if we sign him, but similar to Shane Long last summer I'd believe that while it helps the team on a single deal basis, it won't be the best value deal we do this summer as we're paying a big premium.

Just as info, Atletico paid £6.2m for him from Ajax a year before they loaned him to us, and barely used him. Transfermarkt makes his current value £9.7m.

Can't see us bringing in another lb, all it would do is block the progression of the youngsters. We have Will Wood who can play there as well and he has impressed me this last season.
