Horses for courses though - I'll sometimes have the golf on in the background, and occasionally watch the Sunday of a major tournament. Some people like basketball. I'd rather count the scales on a fish than do that (and I've been to see the Chicago Bulls at their prime - Michael Jordan, Dennis Rodman et al - it was still the most boring experience of my life!)

Yes agreed. As usual, I fall back on my old maxim, it's far better to do than to watch.
My parents were watchers. Never did anything. Never encouraged any of the kids to do anything [Dad did occasionally suggest I should be outside playing because it was sunny - something I pass on as good advice], and the only encouragement I personally got was from my brilliant junior [middle] school teachers. So I have always played the game and realised that if you want real pleasure in sport, that's the thing to do. Football is one of those rare sports/games that is actually really entertaining to watch [still a lot better to play] because it has a different complex dynamic when viewed from a more distant perspective. Many sports just don't have that dynamic. Competitive Sailing, as a classic example, is astonishingly brilliant to do, but even the most ardent fan of it will admit that its only so-so to watch between gin & tonics. :)

I am in Radstock on Tuesday seeing a new potential customer... when posting that, I had originally hoped he'd see me on Thursday morning and I'd be staying near there and maybe grab a beer with you. Now, I am there with a colleague Tuesday afternoon and then driving down to Falmouth.

Wednesday afternoon we drive back via Chard and will be staying over somewhere convenient for Melksham or Westbury the following morning. I was going to ask you if you would recommend anywhere near there, although I have just been told by Mrs FLT that it's Glastonbury!!! Oops. I had wanted to see someone in Glastonbury itself but I think I'll give that a swerve! I may end up looking Bath way and dropping back down.

The Ryder cup is a big watch for me and the wife. We both love it. The wife also likes watching the majors, as I do, unless Bubba or Phil look like they're going to win and then I switch off

    *yes, I am fickle*

See, I don't even know who Bubba or Phil are, and I'll remain quite happy if nobody informs me. :)

No grown man should ever ever be called Bubba. In fact, there should be a law against it.

Edit that...any self respecting toddler would object to be called Bubba here.

Yes, agreed there TSS. You have reminded me though of a time I spent at Cowes watching a sailing race. It was awful as a spectator sport! Particularly as there was hardly any wind. The beer was good though.

The amount of penalties Alonso has for this qualifying, he's starting in Abu Dhabi, 2013.

Just enjoying a vegetable spaghetti...an idea I got from my trip to Majorca. My friends would need to sit down at this point as I call it cooking if my baked bean tin doesn't have a ring pull. Chopping veg and roasting in olive and sesame oil is positively haut cuisine :)

And, as an example of my indifference; although I'm as keen as mustard to go sailing, I may not bother to watch the America's Cup coverage. I'll probably just check up on the race results. Still, at least the option is there if I'm not doing anything in particular.

Yes, I would go up the A303 and then the A350 to Warminster if I were you. The likelihood is that there won't be much traffic by Wednesday afternoon as most people go into the Glasto site Tuesday evening these days, now they are allowed in at midnight, but I wouldn't risk going too close!

If you do go that way, the George at Longbridge Deverill is very good, and it would take you about half an hour to get to Westbury from there, and Melksham's not much further. Let me know where you end up as it's not that far from me!

When my car was in the garage, I had a Golf TDI and its probably the best car I've ever driven. What I'd really like though, is a GTI from the 80s.
