He has gone to Liverpool because A) they are in the Premiership and are one of the most Famous Clubs in the World. B) His salary will increase hugely as will his England chances. C) Arsenal have not made an offer for him, despite showing interest. D) When a big Premiership club like Liverpool show an interest it is impossible to say no. I think it has got nothing to do with Luzon taking him to the next level. I think he would have gone no matter who the Manager was. Joining a big Club is a huge lure for a young player.
Dick, the information I have been told by someone with far better contacts at the Club then me is that (at the end of last season) Joe's intention was to stay with us for another 12 months and then make a decision on his future but with the Club's post season activities he now feels that the Club will struggle in the Championship and that he is far more likely to develop at Liverpool. I think it is generally accepted that, like Leeds, Liverpool are not the powerhouse that they used to be and I will be surprised if they get into the top 4 next season.
Last season Gomez paid tribute to Bikey, who he said had been almost like a big brother to him. Roger Johnson was also a helping hand. TBH was another he could learn from, as an experienced pro who had looked after himself. All 3 gone, and no idea who would be coming in, the only other CB's we have are Lennon and Obileye, hardly the voice of experience, and a pretty chaotic situation for a 17-year-old learning his trade.
I think Gomez has been unwisely swayed by money if he has chosen Liverpool over Arsenal. Comparing Wenger to Brendan Rodgers is a bit like comparing Curbs to Guy Luzon.
I guess an educated guess would be he's told they want him to feature this season. The point of the Europa league being a platform for Liverpool to field youngsters might have swayed it. Joes an arsenal fan, so if their interest was concrete I'm sure it would have been his personal first choice.
Yes but he hasn't chosen Arsenal over Liverpool. ARSENAL DID NOT MAKE a bid for him. There were many Clubs who showed an interest in him including Clubs from Germany, but the Liverpool bid was the only concrete one.
I watched England u21s and was less than impressed with our CBs, Moore and Gibson. I can see Gomez playing for the u21s by next summer despite his young age.
I wonder what Rolo makes of it all as he sits in his Belgian office and ponders his collection of clubs? Is he disappointed to lose a good player? Is he pleased to have some readies? What is Katrien telling him? Does he give it a second's thought? Does he want Charlton to be a club that good players want to play for? Who knows.
I very much doubt that he cares FHB. Look at his reaction in the infamous You Tube video wen Liege fans confront him in his office. A psychotic mixture of arrogance and disdain. He is a horrible virus currently mutating at this Club. I blame Richard Murray for this, 100%.
Yes I found that scary. A man totally without any understanding of fans' passion for their club. You could not get any inkling at all of what was going on in his head when faced by a group of passionate fans. As Katrien said "He will run the club his way and you must understand that" or something very similar. Well I don't understand what his way is. I also watched the interview with Nick Pope when Bury got promoted, and he described them as a "Special club, special group of players". I wonder how many of last season's (or next season's) team would talk like that about us? Especially loanees like Buyens!
Looks like Ben Roberts could be off to Brighton. Sigh. LB - are you able to shed any light on his frustration regarding pope being written off too easily?
Quite a nice leaving message from Gomez though. Steve Avory must be disappointed. BBC reporting Derby are in the chase to sign Gomez on loan.
Jordan Cousins on Twitter saying congrats to Gomez on his move. I'm probably reading too much into it - it's probs intended as a simple good luck message - but it could also read as 'congrats on getting out and making it'; as in the young footballers mentality is do your time and earn your move... Might not bode well.
