I realise as a United fan my opinion is not trusted on Sterling. But I would love it if a club made a stand in situations like these and just made the player rot for the rest of their contract (not even play in the reserves, just train by themselves and play no competitive football for 2 or 3 years. And fine them every time they don't arrive for training or step out of line by complaining to the media etc.).

I don't expect you guys to do this with Sterling as 40m is just way too much money to miss out on, if it was my club I'd want them to do the same as you are & hold out for as much money as possible...

But I just wish there was a high profile case where a club told a mercenary young player to get stuffed and rot for the next few years. Honestly, how badly would it affect a young promising player like Sterling to play zero competitive football for 2 or 3 years (not sure how long his contract is)? It would torpedo his development, and other players would think twice before acting like complete idiots. He should have signed that contract extension at 90K or whatever it was, and if he had another great season he would be able to get the big money move he wanted, if he dropped in performance he'd still be earning well.

These players need to be taught a lesson and unfortunately they'll keep getting away with it until one club makes an example of them. Like I said I don't expect you guys to do that because football is a business and you can't throw away a 40m asset, but it would be great to see if that happened to a money grabbing player who is being totally unreasonable.

    Example I can think of.

    1. Mutu. Chelsea sacked him and chased him in courts and bankrupted him. He in effect got a free to Italy and got a great deal after drugs test failure.

    2. Suarez. Put in his place then signed a new deal with proper release clause as the one he thought he had wasn't one. He got what he wanted.. so did we.

    Bad examples.

    1. Rooney. Demanded to go got a pay rise. Sorry but while he is vital for you etc etc he prob doubled your wage bill over night.

    2. Torres. Nobody believes his guff. He wanted a quick route and gave up the ghost on us but chelsea we're never going elsewhere and we needed a player for that 6 months he left. We were just lucky he flopped there honestly.

    ......

For me this is 80% agent and 20% him being a total numpty. I honestly think this agent thinks it's like boxing and players need to court publicity. I would not be shocked if the whole laughing gas crap is a put on. The BBC interview was a big mis calculation by agent too.

The fact none of these antics have knocked a red cent off his value tells me lfc can stand strong and get their pound of flesh this summer

This is the world we live in unfortunately. The player holds all the cards and can hold the club to ransom.

I remember the days when the club held all the cards and the poor player was at the club's mercy even when the contract has expired. Players were refused new contracts but the clubs would refuse to release the player unless they got a fee. The Bosman ruling chnaged all that. Our players suffered most from the old days. They were paid a pittance, and near the end of their careers couldn't go where the club didn't want them to go. They had their testimonials and those were truly essential for their retirement.

Ah the good (bad) old days !

The difference between Scrotey Sterling and Classy Kane:

"I am happy at Spurs and I look forward to the future with Spurs," Harry Kane said.

"I have seen there is interest but that's all I know. It is flattering for other clubs to maybe be interested."

Kane started for England as they lost 1-0 in their opening European Under-21 Championshipmatch against Portugal on Thursday.

He scored 31 goals for Spurs in all competitions during his breakthrough campaign last season, which ended in him being named as the PFA Young Player of Year.

Kane's impressive year has led to reports that 20-time English champions United are ready to offer up to £40m for him.

When asked if it would be hard to turn down one of the Premier League's "big clubs", Kane said: "Tottenham are one of the big clubs. That is the way people have to see it. I am at a big club."
    ----

Kane, a far better player and prospect but realising he needs to continue to focus and scoring and in a few years time make the move to united/madrid etc.

I hope City haven't called our bluff and come back to take Sterling off us for our ludicrous valuation of him

Don`t understand how you can say this. Last year you would have had 3 or 4 clubs lining up to pay you £50m+, this year you have had 1 club show some interest up to £35m plus a few add ons and now you have turned them down they have moved on.

It may not have knocked a red cent off FSG`s valuation but they are not the ones paying the money.

So you reckon he's decreased about £10m

So on the back of a less successful season, and another year closer to the end of his contract, sounds like you agree his actions (off the pitch) have had no effect on his value <ok>

That`s because he still had 3 years left on his contract and didn`t want to leave, hence the word "would" <doh>

You mean if he hadn`t refused to sign a new contract and keep getting in the news for all the wrong reasons? about £50m with probably 2 or 3 teams bidding <ok>

We're going to get about £50m even without the massive benefit of a new contract

Anyone thinking his off field actions have affected his transfer fee are <laugh>

The same silly arguments were made for Suarez being worth less for his on field actions. Any idiot would know that those things are part of risk management, and the risk level would be extremely low. Especially when you consider what other footballers get up to.

Hypothetical "4 clubs lining up with 50m bids" before this year, well that would be because of the season he had in 2013 2014.

The only reasons his fee has dropped from that guesstimate is because his contract is one year shorter now, and he seems to be expressing a will to leave.

Anyways, there wouldn't have been 3 or 4 clubs lining up anyways, City were FFP tied, Spain doesn't look like an option, Chelsea have Hazard and Oscar and United just are not getting him even if they wanted him, leaving Arsenal as a possible, so that claim of clubs lining up last year is utter bollocks <laugh>

Man Utd had Januzaj and Van Gaal hadn't realised he had to try offloading him to Everton yet

Is that how you see it, seems to be ?

Ah right, so if he had expressed a desire to leave last year nobody would have been interested. Good job he waited a year then really
