Unfortunately, it seems one of Jonas or Marveaux is going to miss out on a place in the first team.

I'm guessing our midfield will be:

    --------------Tiote-------------
    HBA----Barton--Cabaye--Jonas/Marvel

    or

    -------------Tiote-------------
    Barton-----Cabaye-----Jonas/Marvel
    --------------HBA------------

Either way, only one of them will start. So out of the two, which one would you play, and which one would start on the bench for you?

Personally, I'd start Marveaux during the pre-season, so Pards can get a good look at him, but Jonas in the Prem season opener, depending on how Marveaux does. Whichever one doesn't start will become the new 'impact sub' when/if Ranger leaves or is loaned out.

    Thoughts?

Mix and match, Jonas will still need a pre-season, even if he is established in our first team. Let Marveaux play a cameo to see what he can do then start to introduce him in prem games when Jonas gets tired, which is usually after about 65-70 minutes. If he outshines Jonas then he gets a start, simples!

Jonas plays better with competition for his place, I'm excited.

Jonas is the man in possession and earnt it last year. Marveaux will have to take it from with performances. I think he'll take time to adapt so I'd probably start with Jonas. But both have versatility so it is not unthinkable they'll both start. The competition we have been craving is starting to appear in certain areas, hopefully we'll see plenty of enthusiasm to nail down a spot. It's a long season anyway so they'll all get their chance.

Marveaux has to earn his place coming on as a sub for Jonas/Barton.

Plus they could both be in the side if Cabaye doesnt settle or adapt.

    Barton Tiote
    Marveaux Ben Arfa Jonas

Theres plenty of players that can play on either wing next season. I think they'll be rotated quite a bit, to keep Marveaux's groin in good shape and to also bring Ferguson in a little more. I think Ferguson is going to be left a bit more too the lesser cup games this season though.

Jonas always plays better when his posotion his under threat, as he did when Ben Arfa was kicking about so i look forward to seeing him put more effort into the final third of the pitch.

I'd rather have a hard choice choosing a team for good reasons and plenty of options, than have an easy choice and no room for change.

I think it will be depend on game to game performances/training effort and progress and we are likely to see a much more varied midfield then last season.
Personally I would like to see Jonas start for his efforts last season, and we dont know if Marveaux will settle in the prem quickly.

    ----------Tiote----------
    Barton---Cabaye----Jonas
    --------Ben Arfa---------

With Marveaux/Fergie on as an impact subs when needed. But I think formation should change game to game depending on the opposition. Good thing is we are starting to have the depth in midfield to do this.

Yeah, Guti can play RM, he justs plays LM so he can link up with Jose.

If Barton leaves, then that's probs what we'll play, but for now he'll stay in the team.

he just plays LM because it's his position. Just because he's right footed doesnt mean he's automatically a right winger.

I left barton out because he doesnt fit in with my formation (which involves inverted wingers) if he were to fit in he'd be where Cabaye currently is (yeah, i'd play him in his natural position, crazy i know). It's a shame there's that rule in the premiership where you have to play the same 11 players for the whole season, otherwise Barton would get his share of games in my formation.

Hasn't got the attributes of a winger. Simples. Lacks pace/speed, trickery & the dribbling abilities of a RW. You can't put him in a 4231 unless he's playing CM IMO. The only thing he's very, very good at.. is crossing which is a MUST for any winger/wide midfielder.

Barton could defo play wide right in a 4231 for me. As with Beckham you don't need to beat a man to be effective there. I'e never been keen on him in the middle. I've only seen him have a handful of good games for us in there. Anyway it matters not because you'll need more than one formation, and more than one type of wide player throughout the season. The fact we're talking about where Barton fits in is a good sign with regard to depth.
