Sounds a bit steep for a loan deal to me..

I would normally be dead against this, but I'm not in this case simply because we're not an established mid table club. We've sadly taken root (particularly in recent seasons) as a struggling relegation threatened club. For the next year or two, we have to accept that one or two loans for players like this (i.e. with no option to buy) are needed to help get us more established. If, and it's a big if, we become more established, then this kind of deal would be pointless for many of the reasons people have already given here.

One thing I would ask for if I were running our show is for a right of first refusal on Jenkinson if Arsenal decide to sell him within 12 months of our loan expiring. Admittedly, this would be entirely at Jenkinson's mercy of whether he would ever want to join - but at least we'd get first crack if we wanted it and I would be interested to see how a clause of this nature could work in practice.

I don't know enough about Jenkinson to be honest but I think we need to place a bit of trust in Dick. If he reckon's he's a player that can improve us then that's fine by me,never mind the money. If the players Dick and Congerton bring in can move us up the table then next time round, better players will be willing to come. Incremental steps.

We don't know the ins and outs of the deal.

The £2million could be an upfront figure with no wages on top - while Arsenal pay his wages.

It could quite easily be the £2million figure is inclusive of his wages.

Equally easily (and the most probable IMO) we'll be paying his wages and the £2million - which would be a poor bit of business IMO.

If he's one of the reasons between 16th and 10th then £2m is nothing:
Table is Position, team, equal share, merit based, TV income (no. of matches), Total

Can anyone explain why Newcastle - who were awful, got 20 matches on TV last season when all of the other bottom 6 or 7 got 10 or 11 at most? Seems to be something wrong with that IMO - a little bias towards them up the road somewhere and, when you look at the total money, they ended up with more than 10th place?

The Black Cats appeared to have landed their target when they agreed a fee of around £2m with the Gunners, to take the right-back on loan for the forthcoming season but nothing is signed as of yet. The England-Under-21 defender is expected to have the final say on where he goes when he returns from the U-21 European Championships and, although he is not against a move to Sunderland, he would prefer a return to West Ham where he spent last season making 36 appearances. - See more at: https://www.clubcall.com/sunderland/black-cats-may-miss-defender-1772443.html?#sthash.xn9TrYnH.dpuf

Good signing in my book, We need a decent rb, this lad is just that. No one decent is going to sign for us unless we pay massive money, In everyones minds we are destined for possible relegation and no player wants that. An equivalent player would be 10m in the current market and massive wages. This leaves us some money for the goal scoring end of the pitch which is where we need to spend the most cash.

That was the figure quoted at the time.

Found the attached which isn't a million miles off.

    Do you think/know different?

Nearly half what you said. It was undisclosed(fact) with the deal rumored to start at 1.5m, he could go on to cost us 5m for all we know.
