Sunderland have agreed a deal with Arsenal to sign Carl Jenkinson on a season-long loan.

Black Cats boss Dick Advocaat is a huge fan of the England under-21 right back and wants to snap him up for next term.

West Ham and Southampton are also trying to sign Jenkinson - but Sunderland have now stolen a march on their Premier League rivals.

Jenkinson had a happy year at West Ham last season and Southampton can also offer European football which might help his progression more. Southampton know they could lose Nathaniel Clyne with Liverpool ready to sign him.

But Arsenal are negotiating a deal with Sunderland and that now looks on.

Arsenal are demanding a big loan fee of around £1.5m and are ready to give Jenkinson a new contract as they do not want to lose him.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger insists he still has a future at the Emirates but wants him to spend another year playing regularly in the Premier League.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

Will be very surprised if he moves here out of London...especially if West Ham want him back

Plus £1.5m for a loan with what looks like very little chance of potentially signing him by the end of it? not sure I see the sense in that

Good player, but for a loan...too much imo

If he helps gain safety earlier to put us in a better position to attract players next season then it's fine with me.

If he was to join, judging whether it is a good move or not, will probably depend on what other business we do. He could be an important piece of the jigsaw.

I suppose there is that side to it.

Not keen on loanees (I might have mentioned that before :emoticon-0136-giggl). We always seem to improve them for somebody else. It seems very rarely we get to keep them anyway.

but we will be renting a good player without using transfer fees.

Don;t mind improving players for other teams if, in the meantime, they improve Sunderland AFC and put us in a better stead for the coming campaigns - is he better than what we have currently? Hell yes! £1.5m is a lot for a loan but, if we are safe by mid February and it' has something to do with him being here than that's a big plus.

West Ham want him back permanently @Indiana but Arsenal aren;t willing from what I read somewhere recently!

Edit - I posted something recently about yellow cards - I think I mixed this lad up with Callum Chambers!!

£1.5m! A great investment if he helps us stay up this year.

A bit sad just reading that last sentence mind.

What exactly are you smoking? He played almost all season for Spurs - do you seriously think he'd be interested in Sunderland? <talkingtoawall>

Agree if it works like that.

Him not staying after the loan is par for the course though really isn`t it? At least we know in advance instead of chasing after the bugger all through the transfer window for nowt.

We know who I mean. <doh>

Van Aanholt cost £1m and He's our. There are right backs out there better than Jenkinson in that market.

Our loans should be on players out of our price range. People like Salah or Januzaj not average right backs that you could pick up easily if you bothered actually scouting the market.

The exception to the rule is Alvarez. It would seem that on the occasion we want rid of the ****er we might have to end up having him enforced back on us, if Inter are to be believed. Typical Sunderland <laugh>

Spurs have apparently agreed a £3.5m move for Keiran Trippier...cant see why we can match that...
Whilst we arent anywhere near Tottenham, if he wants first team football he has a far better chance of competing with Jones than Walker

That may be an exaggeration tbh, but £2m for an average PL player? Only Sunderland could make a deal like that...

As Parker says, we should be using loans on players who are a level above us, I've seen nothing from Jenkinson to indicate he is anything other than another PL plodder, suited for a midtable team but no better than that. If our scouts did their job we should be able to sign someone his level for around that amount imo.

He's already way better than Jones. He can pass for a start and doesn't panic when he gets it, he likes to get forward to. Should be able to retain the ball better on the right hand side in an advanced position. We already know Jones is suspect defensively do it improves that too. Definitely improves our rb slot massively imo.

You even say yourself he's a mid table player, well that's where we want to be as a target and we are currently a relegation contender. What's not a level above about that?

Who? Who is better than jenkinson with pl experience for less than £2m? I certainly can't think of any! You seem to know a lot on the internal workings of the club. What if Advocaat has specifically told congerton to target Jenkinson? We know nothing about it. I'm guessing the criteria I listed above will bring zero results. We got lucky with PVA. Couldn't get a game at Chelsea and has fit in perfectly for us. Salah and Januzaj? I haven't been particularly impressed with either and don't think they would fit into a struggling team. Januzaj in particular. Luxury players no good for us IMO.

PL experience isn't necessarily required. Why should marcus have to name the players when we are supposed to have a highly trained team who are paid to do NOTHING but search for said players ALL YEAR? Van Aanholt is a good example, others off the top of my head: Seamus Coleman, Daryl Janmaat, Nathaniel Clyne, Kieran Trippier, Alon Hutton, Geoff Cameron, Erik Pieters, Andrew Robertson, Kyle Naughton, Neil Taylor.

All these players are a similar level to Jenkinson, some arguably a little lower, some a bit above imo. They mostly cost well below £2m, although admittedly a few cost a little more. And we're paying that for a ONE YEAR LOAN? It's unbelievable, in my opinion.

Oh, another example: Carl Jenkinson. West Ham got him on a season-long loan for free, we're paying £2m for the same deal. Probably the best example I can give of how utterly ****e we are in the transfer market.
