<peacedove>Some people are advocating for winter break in football in UK.
Games like these we are going to miss:
    Boxing Day: Everton v Liverpool.
New Year Day Arsenal v Everton
New year Day Liverpool v Chelsea.
Do you think there should be winter break?

I think there should be a winter break but it shouldn't impact the Christmas, New Year and third round of the FA Cup games. There has to be some tradition left in football.

3 weeks in January/Feb should be enough for players to recharge as long as the Glazers club owners don't exploit the break by arranging friendly fixtures in Qatar and China. Players are well paid, professional athletes but everything is relative and players in England are disadvantaged by the lack of a winter break as their counterparts in other countries do get a chance to rest and shake off injuries.

CL and Europa re-start in mid Feb so there wouldn't be a conflict with European football.

We like our Christmas and New year footie, leave it alone ffs.

That said I think there's probably too many fixtures crammed into that period, so the calendar could maybe reduced a tad, as it always seems to be the time when clubs pick up shed loads of injuries.

  4. Clubs complain about fixture congestion causing tiredness and apparently the answer is to have a mid-season break making the rest of the season even more congested. Brilliant logic that <doh>

It works in Germany and Spain. Why couldn't it work in England?

God knows why we have to cram so much football over the Xmas/NY break.

Don't get me wrong, I love watching it but it doesn't make any sense.

Keep players fresh, keep morale up (let players actually spend time with families over the period) and at the very least, it should benefit the national team come summer if there are tournaments.

Sometime I pity the players, while others were enjoying with their families on Christmas day, they're out
there training. The only thing they cannot moan about is their wages.

They're done by 40 so have plenty of time for that then.

They can retire at 40 while you and me have to wait

  10. There never used to be a problem with the number of fixtures back in the days when teams only used fourteen players throughout a entire season. The irregular kickoff times and increasing number of internationals are the source of the problem, not the number of domestic games.

I can't see how stopping for a month at Christmas (or thereabouts) would help, there would have to be more fixtures elsewhere causing even more tiredness in those sections of the season. The winter break was only ever mentioned to help the England team, is that no longer the reason? Because if it was it would be laughed at since we have more foreigners than British players in the PL! Only feasible release would be dropping the League Cup but that's only one or two games for most teams anyway!

Those lost fixtures can be spread out more evenly across the whole season, before and after the break.

I think the major benefit is for the national team.

Midweek in particular when there are no international cup or European games.

  13. Lost fixtures? There are no lost fixtures, there are just moved fixtures. Unless or rivals are losing and were not #advantage

That's right,it would make the second half of the season totally chaotic trying to make up the 5 or 6? (maybe more?) games
that would go unplayed over the month break. The benefits would be negligible at best, but I think teams would suffer playing
two games a week for the remainder of the season

my views is they should make one but they should compromise to do it. put it on AFTER the christmas fare.

  16. Well, they could put some of the fixture in the first half too but yes, before and after would be more chaotic

Why are you assuming the Xmas fixtures have to be played AFTER Xmas?

They would be spread out more evenly across the whole season, before and after Xmas.

THewhole thing IMO boils down to this.

league cup sucks up fixture slots. nobody else in europe has a 3rd cup they value like it so they can afford christmas off.

No to the winter break. It is a traditional part of xmas here in the UK and nothing beats a trip to the football on boxing day/new years day.

Lets leave it the the rest of europe and keep our traditions

No break, but one of the fixtures should be moved so it's more like a normal schedule rather than some endurance test that gives further advantages to bigger squads
