It's why I mentioned the poll at the bottom of the Guardian page. That's not just Saints fans doing that.

Hodgson is a ****ing muppet. The only reason he wasn't sacked after the world cup was because he's English. Any of the foreign managers would have been sacked after that disgraceful display. Clyne and Bertrand should be nailed on starters. Hodgson doesn't know what he's doing. He already proved that in the world cup when he showed up with Rooney on the left wing. The fact England got their only point with their 'B' team says it all really. Wilshere has had a one in a lifetime game to bail Hodgson out. The guy had zero goals in 27 international appearances before this game. It is down to pure luck that Wilshere has clicked in such a big way that England won.

He didnt just walk in and expect a place for FS, he was selected as a RB in the squad. The only decent right back in the squad.

If he wasn't expected to play that position then why put him in the squad? - too good to blatantly ignore.
If having the best season of any English right back isn't what is required to get a starting place then what is exactly? - playing for the right club.
Why play a RM in the RB position when you have an in-form RB on the bench? - playing for the right club.

The whole thing just stinks and Hodgson is neck deep in it. Same thing applies to Bertrand.

That's not fair in the FA. They're not stupid you know....

.... They'll extend his contract before the under performing tournament so it's done and dusted :)

Bloody hell! There we were enjoying the break and not getting stressed about how crap Steven Davis is (!) and old Roy throws this one in. Is he really saying to Nathaniel and Ryan that playing in the second best defence in the league counts for nowt? In the case of our left back, he has been voted the best by his fellow pros, but this means nothing?

Back in the day, some bloke called Ramsey recognised that playing well in a ****e team was difficult and capped Mick Channon. Not that Ramsey knew anything about football, of course. And as for Revie - he kept picking Channon when we were playing in Division Two. Shocking. The FA should hold an enquiry into the Channon love in scandal. Clearly he should never have been capped 45 times and his 20 odd goals should be expunged from the records.

    Bloody prat!

To a degree I actually agree with Hodgson. If the England team is winning games (which they are), playing well (debatable) and on target for their goals (Which they are) then you stick with picking the players who have done well for you, regardless of club form. It can be argued whether Townsend has done well or not but he keeps getting picked because he has done well enough to not lose his place. I don’t think that comment meant about playing for big clubs, it meant that Hodgson values how they have performed for England is more important than club form, keep your place until you deserve to lose it.

AS for the Jones/Clyne thing, it is something I definitely don’t agree with, and hopefully because of Jones’ terrible showing in the last game it means that Hodgson will consider dropping him. But with this latest interview I think he won’t pick Clyne to start even if he drops Jones as he can’t say “player x cant be demanding to start, it is a disgrace” etc etc then start him the very next game.

Good points, well made. I can agree with your first statement to a degree. The mantra "don't change a winning team" is fine, but surely there comes a time when you've seen enough of a player to give him a go. You are right to say that Roy has been painted into a corner over Clyne's selection; he's now damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

However, it does not alter the fact that his comments were naff.

It worries me how clueless he seems. Defending leaving Clyne on the bench after bring Jones off by saying he wanted to keep options open for attacking subs. There's a magical way around that Roy. Play your best RB who is actually a RB from the start. Donkey.

I don't think there too much doubt that Roy is a bit of an idiot not to pick Clyne but if Nathan did show a strop at the end of the game (and I'm not really sure how much of that is true to be honest) Roy is right to say what he did. Players always need to show a bit of maturity when they don't get a starting place.

I've read the articles though and even Roy said he did not see any bad reaction from Clyne. So probably a nothing story being stirred up by the media.

I think what Roy is trying to say with 'a good season is not good enough' is meaning that Clyne has been pretty average for the latter part of the season. So Roy is just saying that you can't rely on being good for most of the season if your form is not up there at the moment.

I have no idea how that applies to Jones though although Man U did have a pretty good end to the season. So maybe he is saying 'on current form'.

No, sorry, I don't understand all the anger about this. RH was complimentary about Clyne's abilities but he has to show loyalty to the players which he chosen, right up to the point where he decides to drop them.
If he decides that Clyne's gets the shirt then he will show him the same loyalty. And if Clyne refuses to sign another deal and moves to another club, I guess the steam will go out of this altogether. Just my opinion. Feel free to trash it:)

Oh, and we have had Lallana, Lambert and Jayrod getting their first international caps at little old Saints so I don't buy the big club bias anymore, either.:)

I'm with you on this Channon.....most of the players that have gone to so called bigger clubs were full internationals before they left us. Playing at a smaller club possibly punching above their weight gets them noticed far quicker than perhaps they might with a bigger club. I truly cannot understand the argument to say that any English manager has favoured big club players over Saints players. (The exception may be Le Tiss but that is another story)

It's not big club bias at this point, it's just awful management. Playing a midfielder out of position over clyne - of course he will react. Shocking, shocking management.

I don't get the loyalty comment. Jones has not been picked regularly at right back. England have had 16 right backs in 3 years. Roy needs to pick one who actually plays that position and then he can show that guy loyalty. Jones cannot be that man.
