As B B King said it isn't the notes it is the spaces in between. Some people were impressed by some Britih blues bands playing at breakneck speed. Others listened to Peter Green demonstrating what B B King meant.
With you on this one too. More pretentiousness. I'm tempted to say Green Day, but they're not that bad. But they are distinctly average and I can easily think of ten or more of their contemporaries who do what they do far, far better http://www.not606.com/threads/ten-pop-punk-bands-better-than-green-day.303062/
With GnR - cheesy rock music, screechy voice, white microphone, on stage in his boxers, think they're the most rock 'n' roll band ever. Boring. Green Day are bab, I think, but they serve the purpose of making guitar music for children. It's like a gateway into ultimately better bands.
Captain Beefheart Spent a torrid year one afternoon straining in a terminal constipation-like way to detect even one painful fragment of musicality in Trout Mask Replica ("raved about by John Peel!") with a devotee friend who I later thankfully did away with.
I've given this a listen on youtube recently as I was aware of its reputation, and I have to say that I quite liked it. It really is bizarre, but for me, somehow works.
It's hard to dislike the ridiculous - when it's intended to be ridiculous. When it's earnest and serious, but ridiculous (Guns'n'Roses), it's easier to take a real dislike. And Beefheart was a big influence on The Fall - who I do like a lot.
Don Van Vliet/Captain Beefheart was a strange guy. Definitely gifted, creative. He was obsessed with Zappa, in a kind of love/hate and rival/competitor/collaborator way of being. The worst stuff he did was Unconditionally Guaranteed and Bluejeans & Moonbeams.
Sorry guys seems i`m in a minority, but for me the Smiths are the most over rated whining bag of shyte ever to have attempted to record so called music, but as has been said opinions are like arseholes... and yup my arsehole would rather sh1t on this lot then listen to their droaning
What is (to me) brilliant about The Smiths is that Mozzer never sings a note outside a 7-8 note range. Despite this, they overcome what could be seen to be a severe limitation and make great records. Plus Johnny Marr.
Jealous? Me? Honestly I'm really going to have knuckle down and practise more. I just don't get the time, seriously if I could play things like Little wing, I'd be taking a lot of time off work, just so I could play all day.
Johnny Marr IS The Smiths. His guitar playing cannot be copied, it is so unique and incredible. Just listen to How Soon Is Now and it's clear as day. To quote Noel Gallagher, "Even Johnny Marr isn't as good as Johnny Marr"
Big thumbs up to 'TheCasual' for this thread by the way, It could run and run this one. People can go slightly off topic as long as we talk about music in general. I hope so anyway. Music is subjective obviously, but isn't that what makes it a great topic of conversation? Anyway... Someone earlier said they don't get The Jam... No nowt clown shoe...
