Nigerian defender David Faramola Oniya died on Saturday after collapsing on the pitch after 3 minutes during a friendly. Only 30 years of age so still in his prime.
This seems to becoming all to regular with a number of young players collapsing and dying and it makes you wonder why it is happening. Are they being over trained and how come the very thorough medicals players get these days don't pick up things like heart defects. Could the lifestyle some of these young men lead have some bearing, who knows.

I read somewhere that there's a link between sportsmen who have a genetic heart defect and the liberal use of painkillers - particularly ibuprofen. Apparently it's a match made in hell.

As you say, this seems to be happening far too frequently to just be pure bad luck.

Seems to have occurred more over the last 25 years. Probably suggest that modern training and dieting and probably supplements are causing issues. Professional footballers take all manner of supplements to improve performance remember and side effects can happen.

Decided to check this out using that veritable source of reliable information Wikipedia and you are quite right. There certainly seem more heart related deaths over the last 15-20years
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_association_footballers_who_died_while_playing

I am not sure how many leagues have mandatory testing but would suspect that a number of these deaths occur because young men from poorer countries are being pushed into football without proper testing because the rewards are so good, even in the poorer European leagues.

    The list also highlights:
    1) that there are some freakish deaths on football pitches around the world (overenthusiastic goal celebration, collided with a wall, crossbar fell on head)
    2) football was a much rougher game 100 years ago (fatal stomach injuries, ruptured bowel)
    3) there is actually a Peruvian team called Deportivo ****a or Sporting ****a
