I've never heard them referred to as Punk Rock, I've always seen them referred to as Funk Rock.

    Maybe you misread/misheard.

I categorise Red Hot Chilli Peppers as 'Dad Rock'.

    Boring radio band.

I think it's more to do with their perceived attitude and the way they look, but certainly their sound is far removed the bands they name drop as influences.

A lot of people who later became well known guitarists were inspired to do so by the Shadows, Hank B Marvin specifically. So it is fair to say they played a significant part in pop history.

I'll probably get slated, but I don't get Led Zeppelin.

A load of self-indulgent, pretentious crap.

Did they do anything with a tune you could sing a long to or got your foot tapping or made you want to get out of your seat?

I like Heartbreaker, but that's about it. I've never been able to get into them either.

Fool on the hill has one of the best drum beats I have ever heard, the way he gets out of the break back into the normal beat is sublime! Apart from that I'm not a massive Led Zep fan

That's what's surprising about Hank Marvin, you could quite easily learn to play his stuff when you were nine, technically he wasn't up to much. Ask him to play Purple Haze and he'd be ****ed.

Too much is made of how some band affected society and culture. In general they don't as the wider public are not even aware of them. The Beatles affected things as suddenly working class lads were all the rage, though the early sixties was a time when doors were opened and people came to the fore because of ability and talent rather than being part of the establishment. No band had more influence on society and culture than the Stones though. Prior to them bands were well dressed and well behaved and not seen as a threat to the older generation's way of life.
You have to be old enough to have been there at the time to realise what an impact they had. The likes of The Sex Pistols had to make great efforts to upset people. The well educated, middle class, well spoken Jagger and Jones brought about apoplexy in the older generation just by being themselves. It is hilarious now to see a 22 year old Jagger arriving by helicopter to be fawned over and have his opinion on the state of society sought by Bishops, politicians and the likes of Malcolm Muggeridge. And even funnier to see Jagger playing them and revelling in the absurdity of it all. Just listen to the differences in his accent as he addresses different groups of people.

Maybe but Hank has a beautiful effortless control that is pretty unique. Sometimes 2 or 3 notes can sound much better than running up and down a scale at lightning speed.

Da Vinci was a genius, as was Einstein, in their respective fields.

Tom Waits is a genius in his field. Genius is a perfectly acceptable term to use to describe people so massively gifted in their art form.

Lionel Messi would be stretching it, but he is quite brilliant.

Spot on. And when you look through the history of popular music, the best artists with the most memorable songs, wrote simple melodies - from Buddy Holly onwards. If you can play four chords on a guitar, you can write an infinite number of songs.

He came up with a sound and people liked it, so fair play to him, my only point was that any semi-competent guitarist with a strat and and a Vox AC30 can replicate it with ease.

After much thought, Oasis, Muse & Queen are the 3 I don't 'get' (as well as dislike intensely).

I can think of hordes of other bands and singers I dislike, but I still get their point or relevance, even if I never want to hear them again.

The above mystify me beyond just their songs.

I don't mind Oasis, but I'm with you on the other two.

All three have an element of the circus act. The show seems more important than the music.

The bottom line for me is that I want to hear a great song. Preferably something melodic, upbeat, fast paced, exciting - that makes you feel better about things.

    Oh, here's another one -

    Guns 'n' Roses.

Never bought into it, been irritated by them since I first heard them, my brother liked them and he liked some real dross, and they're just dumb.

Makes you wonder why they didn't. The thing is he came up with a style that was new and was heavily imitated.
I am sure he can live with some people not rating him content in the knowledge that other highly rated guitarists do rate him.
In 1964 only 2 guitarists in the UK had a strat. One was Hank the other was in Chris Farlowe's backing band The Thunderbirds.
