This thread is for anyone to draw attention to any horse they feel should go in the notebook for the future.

I'll start off by putting up a 2yo makng his début today at The Curragh (see below)

Preferably I would like the format to be:
  • one post per horse
  • a brief note
  • pedigree
  • a link to the race form
  • a link to the race video (if available)
But feel free to improve on that

Watched this race and noticed one horse being restrained on the rails whist another on the outside looked to be going for all its worth. The said horse (without knowing which it was) then got switched and aimed at a gap. She duly went through the gap and was running on strongly without being knocked about. Beautifully bred and appears to have potential.

She is obviously highly regarded judging by her entries. I fear they might be aiming too high though. Some beautifully bred fillies she will be up against. I wasn't expecting her to be aimed so high.

Haydock 3.40 Express Himself
This horse won this race by half a length but this does not tell the whole story as he was left lengths at the start, the horse was also hammered in the betting before hand which indicates that this horse is a good way from reaching his final handicap mark. As long as the handicapper does not hammer him this horse should definitely be followed in a better race.

Fairyhouse 7:30 Peleponnesus

Was backed in from 20/1 to 4's for this maiden up against some likely types from the big yards of Bolger/Weld/Oxx and co. He raced prominent throughout before not finding much in the straight to finish 5th, beaten around 8 lengths. He's trained by Reginald Roberts and that yard like to have a punt now and again and are usually not far off the mark. One to keep an eye for in the upcoming weeks and especially in a weaker looking field if the money starts to come.

Made eyecatching progress over a completely inadequate trip. Patently obvious that it was a pipe opener for something bigger over a more suitable trip.

Entered at Royal Ascot next Tuesday

He always runs in this race at Ascot and always runs really well yet finds a handful of more plotted up or less exposed horses to run him out of it at the business end. One of those horses that if you owned you know that his ability is of a horse who should be winning money yet he conspires not to land those big ones. I would like to see him go in at Ascot.

Ran 4th of 12 on 12th June in a 7f maiden at Sandown: unfancied at 33-1, he started slowly but finished well (Twiston-Davies rode). Bell does not over-try his first time out 2yos,

If all goes well after this introduction should be up to winning at least his maiden. Should stay 8f this year and at least 10f next.
 
Squire - stuck behind horses and held onto too long. Wait for Havlin to be back on him at ascot in 4 weels ;))))

Just watched the race. What a cracking run from Squire. Being cynical, I would say the jockey made sure he didn't win that. God, he has learned a lot. Congratulations to connections. He will win more races, no doubt about that.
 
The issue was he was so keen in all his races so stepping him up further wasn't really an option. I think hes pretty versatile on trip. I think he has the speed to win at 7F and could probably win over 1m4f. Eventually would like to see him over 1m4f.
Personally I think 1m2f with a stiff finish is ideal for now. Jockey has to have him tracking his biggest rival closely and then ask early. He takes a long time to winde up and he will only just beat what he can see and will idle when he gets there. Very tough ride, you can tell when you're with Rab he knows that but loves the horse.

I would say this is spot on - part of what I love about horseracing is looking for these idiosyncrasies, not just trying to find a winner but seeing where you think horses should be placed and how they should be ridden. There are some horse that it really doesn't matter and others it makes all the difference to and those are the interesting ones, and Squire certainly comes into that bracket.

Squire is a horse that needs help from the trainer and jockey to win as he needs a certain type of track and riding a certain way. I get frustrated when jockeys who should spot what a horse needs far more than a race reading punter should either don't bother to find out or invent their own view of the horse based on nothing. I have a feeling, and a hope, that before the season ends he might really surprise you. I can see if he found himself in a strong run 10f race and the jock was told to ride him like the winning post was going to come at 9f that he might hit top stride late and be finding his top speed as others were coming back due to the fast pace. Don't worry about idling as although he may idle he has shown that he is a genuine racer, he has had to fend off two challengers in his victories at Newmarket and Windsor and he didn't want to let them past.

The winner Rembrandt Van Rijn is a different class, I think he will either take a top handicap when rising a few pounds to actually get in them and then a listed. This race was superb for him as I was worried he liked a round course and would not take to a galloping track as he had only raced on the all weather and Chester. On Friday however he travelled for fun and was forced push his head through a tight gap, all things top handicappers in big fields need do. You would have to watch a hige amount of races run at Chester to see one win from the position and in the style he did.

Much was expected of this horse as it had won a maiden in very taking style at 2y - for me however this horse has not trained on and will not win a race, certainly not at the level contested on Saturday. It could be that the horse was massively undercooked for her return but to me it looked like she was not a racehorse anymore. She never raced, her front legs never attacked the ground and her stride was too big for a racer.
 
I may have misinterpreted your comment about her stride being too big Blue (I didn't see the race). But the length of stride (without compensating in any way) is restricted to the angle of the shoulder (the layback), The drive from the back will govern the extent to which that can be achieved. Assuming the horse has a well laid shoulder and has the power from the rear it will achieve a greater length of stride with greater efficiency. This means it will, potentially, have better staying power. The most significant requirement then (assuming the horse has the temperament and is sound in all other respects) is having the heart room to contain a large heart (depth more important than width but there should be a good spring of rib).

Hence I'm not sure what you mean by stride to big, unless you meant for sprinting. Sorry if I'm "teaching Granny to suck eggs" as you obviously know what your talking about. <cheers>
 
Saw a horse called My Sweet Lord go around yesterday in the 44,000 Euro handicap over 10f at Chantilly. It never at any stage got a run in the straight and went to the line well held. If nobody spotted it, it might prove a decent bet in the near future, especially in a smaller field.
