In the mid 80s i was a seasoned B-Boy and at school the kids who were into the Smiths , wore horrible jackets with manky patches sewn onto them - a bit similar to the Rock revival of a few years earlier , but less oily and more oil of ulay .
Those kids in that clobber were probably sound kids but in our circle of friends the "wearing 3 trackies at once gang smelling of spray paint n polish" they were twats .
Fast forward to the early 2000s and i "discovered the smiths n havn't looked back - that said i will still listen to a bit of electro once in a while ;D

Similar to my feelings. Ironic though that he wrote the best track, which you posted, on their first album which was a belter and the impassioned Oh!Darling and Helter Skelter whilst the supposedly edgy Lennon wrote their most facile number one I Feel Fine.
Like him, or the Beatles in general, or not you can't deny the talent and output. They came out with more singles and albums in 3 years than other bands have managed in a quarter of a century or more.
People not there at the time don't appreciate how they changed things. Up until then pop acts recorded what they were told to do. They started off the move towards recording your own material. They also brought about an end to copying American acts and ushered in an era where very one copied British ways. Before their first number one the charts were dominated by Americans, after it only Elvis and Roy Orbison had a number one for over 2 years the rest were British acts.

An article that sums things up better than I could...

Oasis rarely sounded much like the Beatles. They Ripped Off The Beatles isn’t just a lazy assertion, it’s a **** one: you want lazy Oasis comparisons? Slade Meets Ride, The Pistols doing Badfinger songs, Tim Burgess/Lee Mavers-hybrid fronting Crazy Horse: there you go, three lazy comparisons for Oasis off the top of my head, each of them better than The Beatles...

I presume you are a paid up member of the Official Oasis Fan Club. Personally I think they are over-rated and mediocre. Though, to be fair, there are worse.

I'm not particularly an Oasis fan at all, I just think the whole 'they just knocked off the Beatles' thing is lazy nonsense.

I think there are some Oasis songs where they haven't just been influenced by The Beatles, they've stolen entire verses or intros wholesale.

Noel Gallagher's solo work is just as bad, and I'm sure he admits it himself.

Oasis's main crime though, for me, is deep blandness.

Noel makes no bones about nicking stuff. At least he has the balls to admit he's doing it.

Oasis are closer to Slade than The Beatles.

I'm a massive Oasis fan btw.

There are plenty of Beatles references in Oasis songs and there's the odd riff that's nicked, but that hardly makes them a tribute band and they've never made any secret of the fact that The Beatles influenced them. Probably the most obvious one is Don't Look Back In Anger, which uses the piano intro from Lennon's Imagine.

I wish he'd have the balls to write an interesting song.

As Noel once said - “We ripped about two songs off The Beatles and the rest off Slade.”

That's opinion. There's loads of interesting songs in his discography, in my opinion.

Most of them are B-Sides which most people haven't heard.

The majority of Oasis' best songs are B-sides.

My mate ****ing ****s over Oasis. He was trying to convince me recently and have me a list of songs to listen to - Oasis, Noel solo and that rubbish Beady band Liam is in.

One of them, can't remember which, was so obviously a Beatles rip that I castigated him on his lazy choices for me! It wasn't even Look Back In Anger. I'll try and find it later as a case point.

Nobody likes that rubbish Beady band Liam is in, that's why they split up after 2 pretty poor albums.

I never used to get Bob Marley or reggae in general, but having had holidays in the Caribbean I can understand a little of its attraction, at least to the locals.

Not a massive Oasis fan, but "Slide Away" is one of the best rock songs to come out of that era.

I havent read all 8 friggin' pages but can I extend it to tv and Breaking Bad? Just what is the fuss about? For me it's boring as ****, poorly written and wathcing it was a chore. I kept thinking 'surely its got to get better soon'. just dont understand what people even see in it. In other things I dont personally like at least I understand the appeal but this just baffles me.
