I agree you should respect a countries values etc, but a few years ago, whilst in Penang, Malaysia i could not believe there was a brothel next door to a mosque, with the girls openly touting themselves on the street as I walked back to my hotel. Taking yr clothes off on top of a mountain, while been incredibly stupid, is surely nothing compared to that! It seems like religious politics has got involved yet again. I do not agree with what these kids have done but it seems like it is another occasion when a country is quite happy to have western tourists and all the money they bring into there country but feels the need to every now and then to prove to their populace that they will come down hard on western tourists. STAYCATION ANYONE?? My wife is muslim so I have a far better insight than most on this sort of indiscretion.....

Happening in Magaluf [which I think is a ****hole btw] too. They're clamping down on the antics of holidaymakers by imposing a series of strict laws. They are quite happy to have British tourists there though. No doubt attracted by the 'reputation.' Double standards, whether you agree with the place or not.

<laugh><laugh><laugh> I would ****ing love to have been at that trial...

Maybe they should have been a bit nicer to their ****ing ancestors if some tourists taking their tops off is enough to send them into furious revenge against their descendants...

The only way it could have been better, is if it were Christians or Muslims complaining...
"And if the Judge pleases, turn to page 8 for the full scientific evaluation and reasoning behind why these young blasphemers angered god and our lord, in his all powerful wisdom, by taking off their clothes, similar to the nakedness he actually imposed on his first created, and thus decided to heap misery, and a good proportion of the Earth, all over our innocent, cloth wearing population.... Love him"

Let's be honest, religious people are lunatics, and any country willing to go that far in advocating law built on religious principle is a country not worth visiting.

If a government have laid down laws in their own country, anybody visiting should make the choice to abide by the laws or don't bother going in at all. I have no sympathy with anybody who says 'Well in my country...'. Tough ****.

I just wish our gaggle of invertebrates would impose the same strict measures within these shores.

If someone went into Buckingham Palace and stripped naked, you'd better believe the police would get involved; it's a place which whether you like it or not, is culturally important to the UK. This mountain is no different, just it has the added curiosity for us super advanced Europeans that the nakedness is being blamed for an earthquake. Oh, those poor quaint Malaysians with their beliefs.

People get onto the anti-religious bandwagon far too quickly most of the time. This has more to do with desecration, politics and nationalism than it has to do with religion.

I'll not speak for anyone else, but I'd much rather naked hobos be in buckingham palace, than a morbid old consequence of incest and evil.

I see where you're coming from, but the reality is the British public have an attachment to our cultural icons (even when they're other people's, like the Elgin marbles).

If someone stripped at Buckingham Palace, they would be arrested, released the next morning and probably eventually fined. I don't think anyone complains that there is a sanction for public nudity on a Malaysian mountain, just the form and degree of the sanction.

As for the English in Megaluf, they make me embarrassed to be British. Locking them all up for a few days of their vacation would get my support.

Don't understand the relevance of a brothel next to a mosque to the whole discussion.

I have no sympathy with them. If you want to go on holiday to these places you read up on the local rules and abide by them. Apparently their guide pleaded with them not to take their clothes off but they ignored him.
It's common in Indonesia as well that the locals in these areas have an unusual mix of Muslim and Animist beliefs. The latter were introduced a long time after the former. These mountains play a large role in their lives and they are very superstitious about them. They often think that volcanic eruptions and earthquakes are caused by a higher power to punish them for their human failings.
It's easier to mock them for this rather than try and understand their culture and beliefs but it has consequences. Of course as a geologist I have to say that the link between exposed breasts and earthquakes has not yet been proved but I intend now to devote a considerable effort to researching this!
Ok enough of this - I have to go out and worship the sun.

From what I saw this had nothing to do with the muslims and everything to do with the animist beliefs. I don't claim any special understanding of the situation though.

The bottom line is that when you go abroad you have to respect local laws. If you really don't like the local laws then don't visit. I'm with Rolando on this one though. I'm really disappointed that I can't find the pic of her boobs. The lass from Derby looks gorgeous. And technically speaking, don't we now have a claim on any tits from Derby who think they can fit into a foreign culture by still being English and dressing it up in a local accent?

Apparently the Sun has offered to pay her fine so I suspect they will be available shortly. Think they must have misunderstood when they claimed they were Sun worshippers.

I think you have to respect their culture and wishes. I think anything religious is a big pile of steaming turd. However I respect others right to believe in whatever they choose. I also respect that countries have different rules and different views. If you go there then that should be respected.
