I don't think many of us have that type of prejudice though. At other clubs I am sure they may, but not on this forum.

I'd take Austin and I would guess he'd be a big success here, but as we have said - no guarantees. The price would need to be right based not just on his "value" but also considering the number of players we may want to sign, versus the budget we have.

I wasn't saying many of us, but there is a few who seem to think that way, I might be wrong just my opinion of course.

What would you be willing to pay for Austin? And does anyone know many of his 18 league goals were pens last year?

I don't understand this, Austin would cost less than double what Pelle cost, will (arguably) score more goals than Pelle, and is 4 years younger? I understand you weren't making a direct comparison just pointing out the flaws in some of that.

I do think there can be more value when signing abroad but it can always be a gamble, Dani was a big name with loads of talent and how did that one end? I think Austin would be a good solid signing who would instantly improve our team/squad and add another homegrown player (don't know about others but I enjoyed having a lot of English players in the side).

Sometimes I think people on here don't want him because his name isn't Charlee Austiniho!

With Osvaldo there were red flags everywhere, he failed in England because of his attitude, not to do with his ability. Ravel Morrison has loads of talent, would you want Saints to sign him?

I agree with FLT about the 50/50 aspect of any signing, and throw in that because of the money PL teams earn and that they are our division rivals then buying one of their decent players will cost a fortune in comparison to looking abroad, I generally prefer buying players from abroad, unless it is a properly proven good PL player, which Austin isn’t imo.

Now I think that part is daft JWP.

At first it seems like a ridiculous argument, but I've mentioned this before, and I do think it has some merit. I personally think exotic nationalities and names do go a little way in making a player seem more appealing to the fan base. I simply can't understand why people don't rate Austin. He took the absolute piss last season playing for a crap team. I'm a little inclined to believe that had QPR bought him from River Plate or Sampdoria, and his name been a bit more mental, people would have been far more excited about him. Look at the fee Everton paid for Lukaku!! And as soon Benteke scores in 4 or 5 games, people dismiss the half a season where he didn't score at all, and suggest he is good enough for Real Madrid etc...

Sorry FLT, wasn't meant at you, more just a general rant thing...

Okay I'll hold my hands up and admit that was a poor example, but so was yours about Lovren. Define 'properly proven' ? That would come to us? 18 league goals in 35 games is a fantastic record, who was our last player to have an average better than 1 in 2 in the PL?

Looking at Chalie Austin's goals per game, he averaged 0.5 this year, and 0.52 throughout his career. Compared to Juanmi's 0.18 (and Pelle's 0.34)
I want Austin even more than I did before now...

Great post, exactly what I was trying to say but you word it a hell of a lot better <applause>

Exactly, like I said in my post above, who was our last player to average a goal every other game in top division? If that's not proven who is? The answer is no one who will come to Saints. And you can argue QPR are a poor team and he will get more chances here, also at 25 he should be going into the best years of career.

I wouldn't be dissapointed if we signed Austin but to suggest that he will automatically come in, score goals and be a better fit for the team than Pelle is madness.

I too don't buy into this "proven premier league" guaranteed goalscorer stuff... Bent, Jeffers, Caroll, Torres etc - there are no guarantees

Sure certain players (e.g. typically South American players) often take a little longer to settle/don't settle to the style of football but players like Alderweireld, Pelle and Wanyama are great fits for the premierleague - it's about identifying the best fit for this team and not throwing money at premierleague talent just because they have had a good season. For £10m Austin is worth a punt, any more and I'd prefer to look elsewhere.

18 in 35 is a fantastic record. But he has only been in the PL for one season. Look at Kane and the figures being bandied about for him with this supposed bid from Utd. Again one season where he scored a **** load of goals, no guarantee that he will be able to keep anything like this form up. This is just reinforcing my point about English/PL proven players. Going back to the Bent thing, he wasn’t “flavour of the month” as you put it, he was a far more proven PL striker than Austin is, scoring regularly in the PL with Charlton, Spurs (when he played) and Sunderland over a number of seasons, and yet he still flopped at Villa. Could argue circumstances/tactics/settling in the area all are factors, but these are also factors with a player coming from abroad, and why you need to do your scouting thoroughly.

You are right that we would have no chance in signing a PL striker who has scored at the ration Austin has over a number of seasons, that is also because to score at that rate over a number of seasons makes you pretty ****ing incredible so it is unlikely that Austin will keep that ratio up. So if we are going to take a gamble I would rather go for someone we have properly scouted and done our research on who costs half of someone we have properly scouted and done our research on who plays in the PL.

Why can't we sign both? And is that Spanish striker pronounced "You and me"?
How many attackers do we need (keep happy)?
We have JRod, Pelle, Mane and Long (& Gallagher) already. Can see that we need an alternative to Pelle (big physical centre forward) who ran out of steam mid season so Austin is the obvious target. To buy any more smaller nippy forwards when we have three already seems a little excessive
The only issue that could put us off Austin will be wages as he was offered a £60k a week contract with QPR so will be looking for at least that much from prospective clubs

You say he will instantly improve our squad? And yet agree there are no guarantees in football transfers? I think he is a natural goal-scorer and would improve our team but there are definitely no guarantees.

Don't see what's wrong with my statement, there's no guarantees but I think he will do well, which is my opinion?

Sorry but don't see what you're getting at?

This I think we only need one striker really and if we can tie that up early then we can focus on other areas.

Austin would be a great, great buy for us, I have no idea why people are arguing against it. Sure there will be other strikers worth looking at, but if there is a chance we can get him we should 100% go for it.
He is young, English and (no matter what a few of you folks say) buying from someone already used to the premier league is less of a gamble. Every transfer is a gamble but there are less things to go wrong when a player moves in the same league.

I'm not sure if you guys have watched him much this season to be criticising him? He is a big step up on pelle. QPR are absolutely awful and he still scored more than our grazi

Sorry but don't see what you're getting at?

Yeah your opinion but others are wary as he has only had 1 season in the prem, as there are no guarantees, especially if other teams want him as well and his price skyrockets as he is English and young, when there might be better players available abroad. I think we should go for him.

Okay, I think there could be a little more honesty here. I'll start it off so it's easier for others (and this is regardless of the fact I DO want us to sign Austin).

I, LTL, get more excited when we sign someone weird and wonderful from abroad that I haven't heard of. Just being honest, it's more FUN. There's just something about signing someone we don't really know because there's always the chance we could be unearthing the new Messi. Yes, it could equally be the new De Ridder, but come on, how many of us really knew all that much about Mané before he put on a Saints shirt. You're not going to sign the new Messi from GB because my god, we'd have heard about it in our ridiculous press from the day they were born.

Of course it's exciting getting a Brit too. It's exciting when they're a 'proven' player, or a player other teams are desperate to secure. I'd be excited if we get Austin, no doubt, but there's just something that appeals to the child in me when we sign someone a little mysterious!

Although Newcastle are also linked with Juanmi, Petter Veland (journalist within la liga) says Saints are the frontrunners. Link is far stronger.
