I went there about 2 months ago. S'alright. Gave us this sort of tea, in a tiny cup, made from shellfish. It was a bit weird to be honest, but I supped it. Had my girlfriend's too, she didn't like it. I had this cod dish with risotto (very, very heavy on the garlic in that) and chorizo sausage. It was alright, but not earth shattering. I just made a salmon thing for tea, and I'd rate that higher. That's all I'm saying.
I've just come back from Zillis. I feel sick I've eaten that much and I've still brought a doggy bag home with me. Just got the wedge of the lads birthday cake and a cup of tea to get through now
And talking of restaurants, I took one for the team and ate at TGI Fridays yesterday. Blackened chicken fajita - very nice actually. The staff are very attentive, perhaps over-do it a bit, and are made to wear daft uniforms (red & white striped tie and braces), which amused me. It's just a standard chain. Perfectly acceptable interior, food is as good as you can expect for an average £12 or £13 a main course, and the portions are decent. It is what it is. The chips were good. Very nice indeed.
Was that your day in Leeds? I meant to ask how it went. And if so...(shakes head at choice of TGI).....
Yeah, we had lunch there. I went to the Music Hall place you mentioned, plus also Tapped. Good places. Music Hall is very popular with the yoof, I think it's the kind of place the people who are masterminding Humber Street's transformation ache for. I liked Tapped, a vast array of beers and its own micro brewery. Both places did pizzas that looked cracking. An enjoyable day all in all.
Our lass was creaming over the cocktails in The Alchemist. We had a few in there. Went in about tea time, in a few hours, and it was packed the whole time. This was a Monday night. Good theatre watching some of the drinks being made.
I thought 1884 was top notch, there are dining deals with a set menu plus drinks for not a lot of money, save quite a few quid. Best dinner out I've had in quite a while, would defo recommend
Is it a bit ordinary, my daughters threatening to take me for Fathers Day? I'm a bit sorry Wilsons went, I thought it was alright in there.
The alchimest is great but it takes an age to get served. Botanist is alright, if you like herbs in your drinks.
Was in a place the other night and our lass made me choose off of the cocktail menu. Sloe gin mojito. Sounded the best of a bad lot. It came with basil and mint sticking out of it. And served in a jam jar. Whilst shaking my head in stunned amazement I noticed a group of young lasses, armed with straws, all hunched around a hat. Cocktail for 3. Called The Mad Hatter. Served in a ****ing hat. £19.95. If it had of been 10/6 I could have understood. But nigh on twenty quid. I can only hope that they rounded it up and left a tip.
Tried the new tapas place a few weeks ago. It's decent enough to recommend giving it a try. Difficult to judge what level they're aiming for. Obviously want to be a bit more causal than the main restaurant, but for me it was bit too formal for a tapas bar. We we got a table for two as a walk in just gone 5 o'clock. Two other walk in groups got turned away after us and I got the impression they just didn't like the look of them. Anyway, the calamari was actually very good. Plenty of Smokey paprika. Meatballs were also decent. The other dishes we got were forgettable. Nice coffee though.
1884 was very good when I went (a few months back now)....I might be too used to southern prices now but I thought it was excellent value as well. At lunchtimes you can get 3 courses for under £20- nice way to while away an afternoon. It's the sort of place that deserves supporting in Hull- quality food, good wine selection and a nice venue. Got to make a change from an endless supply of average Italian places surely?
I think I had an evening 3 course meal which a glass of Bollinger and it was around £50 for two people, not expensive for the quality of food, the service was very good and not at all stuffy.
The 2 owners were husband and wife, Wife ran off with another bloke and the Divorcee husband sold it off to make sure she didn't get anymore income from it. Literally the only reason it's closed
Was it busy on a Monday? Yeah fair point, I can imagine it is very much what's in mind for Humber Street. They also get bands on, Michael Cera the actor and his band is there in a couple of weeks. I'll check them out.The pizza is very good as it goes. Glad you enjoyed. I deliberately didnt recommend Alchemist cos you said you didnt want anywhere, and I quote, "poncey". Yeah some of the cocktails are great but it can take a lifetime to get served. Your best bet is to get a pint in and then order a cocktail. It also attracts people from Wakefield who have aspirations to be cool. Bless em. If I'd known you wanted somewhere like that I'd have also mentioned Angelicas, great views of the city.
This is my strategy of choice. Go up to the bar as if you've been billyed. Order a pint only. Then when it's delivered add 'oh, and a southern Tibetan dark moon bucket of weasel phlegm for Wor Lass'. In the time it takes to make that, drink your pint. Then when her cocktail is delivered simply add 'oh, and another pint please'. Sorted.
