If it does work, it could cause havoc for similar cases in the future.

As I understand it, yes, which is less than he's worth, but better than the nothing you'd get for an older out-of-contract player.

Yeah but we will have saved over £7m in wages because he turned down the bigger contract

So £12m and keep him for 2 years is far better than the current bids of about £25m to sell him

So you haven`t got Milner or us Depay then? I know they can`t sign until July but the bid can be placed and accepted before then <ok>

Except that this isn't true. Ings would still attract a fee, whether it be settled between the clubs or via a tribunal.

The problem with not having an agreement is that there are often a load of extras tagged on if there's no consensus.
Sell-on fee, goals scored, international appearances and a host of similar things are all taken into account.
That's why Liverpool want to sort it out with Burnley.

So 3m a year for a player to rot in the reserves then getting a 5m tribunal fee sounds like good value rather than extracting maximum value of 25m. I see you're the businessman here

There's no bid for Milner because he's out of contract as well.

The deal for Depay has been agreed, but as far as I'm aware, doen't go through until July.

Burnley will get a development fee for Ings, but that's not the salient point. The point is that Spurs phantom bid is meaningless as the lad will be a free agent on the day the window opens. If Spurs wanted the player they'd have been speaking directly to his agent not Burnley, once the player agrees to sign on a Bosman, then they might try and agree an out of tribunal fee. What they've done here is an absolute nonsense and as I said - completely transparent.

Even if he didn't play a single game for us £3m a year to pay for a tough image is a great investment

Otherwise letting Sterling act a **** and get his way would cost us tens of millions in agent fees in the coming years

Ings would attract compensation for Burnley, not a fee.

Sterling has to be put in his place but we all know he won't be staying for next two years.

Playing devils advocate, no one who is looking at Liverpool as a stepping stone (like Suarez) would risk coming to a club that would scupper their chance at a bigger move.

Having said that, i think its a good stance to take and you need to lay down a marker to anyone else who tries to do a sterling

You can't keep a player against his will for 2 years, never gonna happen.

The £25m is merely the scene setting. You've asked for £50m the 2 Manchester clubs have started at half that, he'll go for somewhere in between, but it might drag on throughout the window.

Spurs wouldn't be allowed to speak to his agent until his contract expires.
    Tomato, tomato.

    Wrong.

He can speak to anyone when in the last month of his contract.

Hence the reason Milner and Ings have both agreed to join LIverpool, otherwise they'd be in breach of contract eh....

That doesn't work quite as well written down <laugh>

But it makes a big difference if we're talking about compensation of costs, or coming to an agreement on what the player is worth.

We made a big profit on Torres and Suarez but never won the title with either of them, if Ings also helps us to not win the title we might get a decent sell on price.<whistle>

I think he meant Depay's not in the last year of his contract.
