After seeing OLM's 'Thornton-Varley' thread, I began thinking about faces you used to see around Hull in the past. There was Roland the 'Gentleman Tramp' (AKA Itchycoo), who was always at Hull Fair. please log in to view this image There was Eva Smith, who was severely alcoholic and was always getting arrested for being drunk and disorderly. please log in to view this image Then there was Billy Berry (and his lady). please log in to view this image Any more, anyone?
I was just thinking dave the rave, I last saw him over four years ago. Spookly i was talking about him with my crew mate and he crossed Spring Bank right infont of our ambulance. He still had his grey blazer on and was probably muttering something about jelly babys.
The busker who was always outside LAs. Whenever I saw him he would always be singing 'Wild Thing' it was like Ground Hog day over and over again!
Roland was always rumoured to be quite wealthy, but just preferred the life he was leading. I don't know whether that was true or not?
He used to go in Stardisc (Silver Street/Arcade) to see Lou Saphir(?) who owned the shop. Lou told me he was from a well-to-do family, but that he was 'mentally damaged', so would never do more than he did. (I think the family kept an eye on him, though).
There was also 'Joe Seawheel'. He used to ride a bike adorned with plastic fruit (as was his hat). He appeared to live in an old shipping container, which you could see from the train as you passed Hessle Foreshore.
There was a black girl who used to wander round the city centre screaming obscenities at everyone and self harming, I can't remember her name but she had a stunning sister, who I think was called Lorissa.
Not quite old relics, but the photo of the speedway reminded me of the Hulls Angels Mick Mitchell, George Craig, Dick Shepherd and others at the track near Hedon. Their logo had a shield with three crowns on it.
That's a bit odd, I can't find any pictures of him either, even on the thread we had about him before where I posted pictures they've all gone(none of the links work now, all the pictures have been deleted).
Scary one that. I once went out with a girl who was also seeing a mate of Ray's, Eric Angel I think he was called. I had nightmares about the pair of them working me over.
Here's a relic of another type - This Hull terrace went up for sale last year for £50k, after the owner had to go into a home, it's virtually unchanged since the war and is believed to have been in the same family since it was built. The painted wall panels are great... please log in to view this image please log in to view this image please log in to view this image please log in to view this image please log in to view this image please log in to view this image
