    David ****ing Beckham?!!!

    http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/world-football-turmoil---david-5837754

The guy hasn't two brain cells to rub togother. Surely we could think of the likes of Beckenbauer, Lineker, Hansen, Copell, Barnes or many, many other with a modicum of an education instead of a male model. Even his missus seems to be more politically astute.

I like what i hear from Ginola so far, but i am concerned that the french FA STILL voted for Blatter last season.

Roy Keane would be brilliant!!!!!! <diva>

I know I' m on a hiding to nothing saying anything nice about DB on this forum but.... Like it or not he is seen as an iconic figure in many parts of the world and would represent an acceptable face of football. I am with you though as I don't like this celebrity obsession. Far better to have someone with experience of working with other countries and pulling opposing parties together to achieve some good. A track record of publicly questioning corruption would be a bonus. I don't have any names in mind though.

I don't think it has to be an ex-footballer, really.

Just someone who has a knowledge of politics,, neutral, is strong-willed and likes football.

If you limit it to just ex-footballers then it ends up being a vote for who was the best and most liked footballer rather than voting for the best candidate. And if you limit it to ex-footballers then you're losing a lot of possibly viable candidates.

Sorry mate have to disagree, football doesn't need a face, it needs a talented well educated leader and Beckham is no leader and as far as I know his entourage do all his actual thinking for him, let alone actually understanding the whole system.
It'd be like getting Julian Clarey to be Google CEO ffs <laugh>

Just someone who's honest, incorruptible, neutral, got a few brain cells and cares more about their job than their image...Shouldn't be too hard to find =/

I did quite like Figo as a candidate, to be honest.

Just to get something straight, I thought David Beckham was an amazing footballer. At his zenith, there has not been too many in the game who could strike a ball better. But we need someone like Lord Coe (preferably from within the game of football though).

Having said all of this though, I'm begining to think that a british/English figure or US figure looks like a coup, as would a re-run of the 2018 bid. Something has to be done about the one country, one vote malarkey though: perhaps something based on the US electoral college model, with numbers of votes reflecting populations? This would still give the third world and Asia a massive advantage, but would be better than the current system.

To be fair on 2018, Russia has never had a world cup, the voting system is **** I agree

The system should be moving around every nation\s capable of hosting or (co hosting where possible) that wants to host, in order. Once every willing and able host gets their turn, then others can have seconds. The US had 94 so they had some neck bidding for 2022, and they should scrap the continent crap, an England WC should be able to follow a Russia WC. It has been a long wait since 66 though you did get a Euros since but still

    This.
Whilst I agree the whole voting system is corrupt, the realist in me accepts that there is always going to be an element of corruption/financial bias when it comes to awarding World Cup hosting.
But I have no problem with Russia hosting the World Cup because:

    a) They have facilities to do it (big stadiums that meet UEFA safety standards)
    b) They have a their own football league and seem to like the sport (I know their league is young relative to the Central European leagues, but they have a footballing history at least).
    c) Their weather actually allows for the tournament to played in their ****ing country without ****ing up all the domestic leagues and causing a massive logistical and financial upheaval.
    d) They have hosted major sporting events in the past (Sochi) and did a decent job

No problem with Russia hosting it, even if Putin is a bell end :p

I think it really ought to be awarded on a continental basis. I have no issue with asia as a block, south america as a block. central and north america as a block, even afrcia and "ocenania" as one block together. If we said hey europe you will get every 4th world cup = every 16 years would it be awful?

we are after seeing brazil, then it was meant to be europe (russia) and then away again but qtar makes no sense at all.

i think it says it all when china has not bid. of all the nations out there and one who even did business with IOC who are corrupt to... well fifa must be spectacular to them

  17. Going by the 'they've not hosted a world cup before' theory, what's the issue with Qatar then...? <whistle>

    Fixed :bandit:
Agree with it all except the Putin romance in the last line <whistle>

The only thing I'd say about Putin is, he's a strong leader. I'd sooner get behind a strong leader rather than a windbag like Obama Harper Kenny or Cameron, Putin leads while they are nothing but corporate banker shills. Don't get me wrong, he's dodgy but here's the thing, if you want to lead Russia, an Obama or Cameron or the like would never survive in that environment.

So I guess Putin is the devil you know, and we know how that phrase goes.

Russian politics is nothing more than faction based oligarchy rule. Gangs. That's what makes me laugh about the whole Ukraine situation, Ukraine is exactly like Russia was 2 decades ago, where corporate takeovers involved taking over the head office of a company you want.. with AKs <laugh> The media has been dead silent on this kind of thing in Ukraine, including 12 political and journalist assassinations that no one has reported in our media.

now the west has grown totally bored of the Russia invading Ukraine conspiracy theory :bandit:

A vanity film about the history of Fifa has flopped in the US, taking just $607 (£397) in its opening weekend.

United Passions was funded by about £17m of Fifa cash, and was completed before corruption charges were made against 14 of its officials in May.

Starring Tim Roth as Sepp Blatter, the hagiography of football's governing body has had damning reviews.

The Village Voice called it "not merely ham-fisted, but pork-shouldered, bacon-wristed, and sausage-elbowed".

The Guardian added that "as proof of corporate insanity it is a valuable case study."

The movie's budget was estimated at between $25m - $32m (£16- £21m), with Fifa said to have put up about three-quarters of the money.

It debuted in the States on Friday, on just 10 screens.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the FilmBar cinema in Phoenix reported takings of just $9, meaning only one person bought a ticket.

Its release came as Fifa faces an investigation into allegations of corruption during the bidding process to host the 2010 World Cup.

The US Department of Justice has indicted a total of 14 current and former Fifa officials and associates on charges of "rampant, systemic, and deep-rooted" corruption following a major inquiry by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

President Sepp Blatter stood down last week, although he faces no charges himself.

United Passions purports to present the history of Fifa through three leaders, and co-stars Sam Neill as Blatter's predecessor, Joao Havelange, and Gerard Depardieu, who plays Fifa founder Jules Rimet.

Depardieu was the only actor who attended the film's world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2014.

Ever seen The Producers? This is probably just some wheeze by FIFA to launder money. Well, why else would they hire Tim Roth?
