I was even younger and wasn't really old enough to care TOO much about who the manager or the players were. I cried at the results more often than not. I think we lost to ****ing Partizan Belgrade or some **** on penalties around that time and I was beside myself. Definitely, we are often accused of re-writing history, but it is the mackems who have done that with regard to Robson, without a doubt.
I'll not bother as I don't really care, just thought I'd let you know that it was a minority who wanted Robson out
To be fair it's hard to disagree too much with wor Freddie. You go to other cities and you're just surrounded by stunning lasses, whereas the average weight of girls at up Bigg Market on a night must be 15 stone plus You get the exceptions but as an overall rule...
I remember back in 1997 and checking (on teletext) the Newcastle vs Leicester City score. 3-1 down and we're approach full time (70 odd minutes), I go off in a wild strop and i throw my mega drive on the floor, only for Shearer to hit a quick fire hattrick. Ooooh did I get my arse kicked when my mum found out
Haha! One of my earliest teletext memories was when we beat Sheffield Wednesday 8-0 (maybe Robson's first game??). I was getting more and more excited every time I "refreshed" the page and saw another goal go in. I cried at the end of the night because I was desperate for Shearer to become the first player to score a double hattrick, but he only got 5
Well, I was at his last home game (aged around 10 or 11) and certainly noticed no chants aimed at the manager, only absolute despair at somehow failing to win from a position of being 2-0 up at home to Norwich Remember, Robson was due to leave at the end of the season anyway as we weren't renewing his contract.
So you're basing your entire argument on the recollections of a kid ...... so survey, no proof, nothing
I doubt it. I wasn't an outsider regarding Robson. As our family knew the Robsons, having relatives at Sacriston, I followed his career everywhere we went. I was disgusted at how he was treat at Newcastle.
That may well be the case ...... however, this article is typical of the mood at that time. (I only searched 'Robson booed at Newcastle 5th' and this came straight up.) Robson rages on Newcastle fans by MARTIN HARDY, Daily Mail Last updated at 07:44 10 May 2004 "Sir Bobby Robson hit back angrily last night at the fans who jeered his Newcastle team after a home draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers looked likely to cost them a place in the Champions League. Sir Bobby, 71, saw Alan Shearer miss a late penalty as Newcastle ended a disappointing week - in which they went out in the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup to Marseille - by throwing away two points at St James' Park against relegated Wolves. The Newcastle team were booed at final whistle and when it was announced there would be a lap of honour, only a quarter of the crowd stayed to watch. Robson said: "I can't stop the reactions of the fans. They are what they are. We thanked the ones who stayed behind. When Robson took off Laurent Robert in the 80th minute, the Frenchman was jeered from all sections of the ground and his replacement, Hugo Viana, was also heckled as he came on. Shearer's 82nd-minute penalty miss, as Wolves goalkeeper Paul Jones pulled off a brilliant one-handed save, increased the frustration of the fans. Nah, only posting facts and quotes, here's another from Sky Sports, "SIR BOBBY ROBSON has hit back, claiming the club's supporters have short memories in calling for him to be axed." And more from Craig Bellamy, "We didn’t start one season too well and I can just remember, a lot of fans were turning and booing and Skysports would be outside the ground and Newcastle fans would be moaning about this and that, and it just led to the manager getting sacked, which was just a complete shock and was embarrassing really when I look back on it now, how he can get the sack, but I also thought the crowd played a big part of in that as well, and for me I’ve had options to go back up there since and I wont! no chance! because I played for him and there is no one else to play for up there.”
Done a right number on the Mags here smug. Time for a certain poster to back his claims up after demanding you back up yours.
