Aye mate Agios north the one thats not very populated with the little fish restaraunts dotted along the coast. Hell i am getting a tan thinking about it. We stay at a small place on the front called Costa golden beach, the family are superb and cant do enough for you.
That's a nice part of Corfu we stayed in arilas next resort along also been to San steff and afew more in Corfu happy holidays
I haven't been back to the Greek Islands for many years. Some nice places, but I found the people rather cold, particularly in Crete.
We go to stalis near hersonossis in Crete most years we have met some wonderful Greek people.mostly hotel owners,bar and resteraunt workers and find them very friendly. But of course there is the not so friendly Greeks Aswell. We tend to meet up with the same Greeks every time we go to stalis. Over the years there is more ex pats working there and less Greek people. Times have changed over the years and if I was completely honest the current day Greeks ( some of them ) are not as forth coming as the years gone by.
Bit harsh to drop this on Germany's toes, the war is long gone and we can't hold modern Germany responsible after all this time. Wasn't they an agreement in late 80's early 90's that Germany had paid it's compensation out and that was it finished with?
Its like all these caribbean islands who are saying they're going to sue the UK for compensation for the slave trade! Or Mugabe blaming the whites for how poor his country is today! You've had plenty time to sort yourselves out! Get on with it!!
Absolutely right but surely Germany could offer the sort of help which Greece offered after the second world war to Germany and wipe some debts to enable the country to get back on its feet. Germany had stolen their treasury and there are two towns near here where the Greek men were herded into the church which was torched with the women and children forced to watch and then the women and children were transported to work camps. Greece had nothing after the war and they wiped the debts,I don't think I could have been as forgiving. Every man , woman and child in Greece owes about 75000 euros in my reckoning and the country has no natural resources worth speaking of , sky high unemployment and poor exports. Germany is rich, three Mercedes on each drive I've been told and they can't find a way to help!
Without reading the entire thread... anybody on here been to Mykonos? Thinking about going there in July for a break, it looks lovely but there's something I can't put my finger on saying to me 'You're gonna be bored out of your mind'.
Yeh been lovely place.its a little expencive.quite a lot of gay bars not realy a problem as long as you know.usal excellent Greek food and drink.its awhile since I was there but I think the sand is volcanic black.worth going terry give it a try
Its hard to go wrong with anywhere in Greece mate as long as you know what you are going for must admit though everywhere I have been is a bit untidy I don't think they worry to much about tidiness outside of there own places but for somewhere to chill its hard to beat.
Cheers fellas. The gay bars don't bother me, there's enough of them in Manchester! I was/am concerned it'll be a bit limited for things to see/do. I'll probably go if not this summer then next.
The point I was making is that modern Germany should be willing to give another country the same sort of support it received after the war, not that they should be paying for what happened 70 years ago. If the same sort of repayment package was applied to Greece as applied to Germany there would be a good chance that the Greek economy would grow fast enough to pay off the debt they have sooner rather than later
True. When I moved here twelve years ago apart from in Athens and Thesaloniki most of the old people didn't have indoor plumbing. If I may quote thewall. Imo. There were many Greeks who were living on the breadline before the euro was introduced. They then tried to live with the euro and couldn't survive. Some in the holiday resorts couldn't work out the correct value and either over charged or in some rare occasions under charged. There was also the scenario of a lot of Greeks trying to become millionaires providing in the holiday resorts.they were not happy to just make a good living they over charged for most things. Now the economy has gone tits up the only way to get custom is to keep the price down. Just my opinion like
How many times has the Euro zone been baled out? Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Cyprus. It used to be cheap to go on holiday to these places but since the introduction of the Euro inflation has gone through the roof. A beer in those countries is no cheaper than it is here now. I hope the whole EU comes crashing down like FIFA is starting to.
None of us like to be ripped off and we are all suspicious of people cheating us in other currencies........remember how hard it was for old people when decimalisation happened in the UK? Many of the tour companies offered packages to us and they could win both ways as they paid the Greeks a pittance. When I told the hotel owner what I paid to kennel my dog in the UK he was flabbergasted and when I told him what the airport parking was I think there was a tear in his eye because he got €30 a week from the tour company and had to change towels , bedding and provide the welcome basket. If you travel at peak times the costs are more , just the same as buying a ticket on an airline or a room in a UK hotel. The money they make during the two month season here has to cover costs for the other ten months when they still have living expenses. Billy, a pint is still about £2 and you sit and look out over a warm sea often with a free meze. If you look in Lidl you can see the prices the Greeks have to pay, they have gone up and in most places they are not ripping you off unless you choose the posh , flash bars where the yachting fraternity hang out. Most of us would rip them off if we got the chance!
