Couldn't agree less tbh ....... does SKP deserve a statue more than Sunderland lad Gary Rowell who scored a hat trick at SJP?

Do the captains of the FA Cup & League winning teams not deserve a statue more than Quinn?

Bobby Kerr ......... 12 years at Sunderland, Captain in 1973 and still a great ambassador for the club.

Charlie Hurley ........ 12 years at Sunderland, Sunderland fan's Player of the Century and still a great ambassador for the club.

I agree, the above do deserve statues.

You're allowed more than one so hopefully we pull our fingers out and celebrate some of these people at some point.

I'd suggest Shackleton would be another contender.

I think the things are brilliant. Shows pride in your history and creates an atmosphere/identity at a ground.

Alan Shearer is the Premier Leagues highest scorer. He's Newcastle's leading goalscorer. Why not have a statue of him? He's a legend. Fact.

You think Gary cocksucker Rowell can hold a candle to him?

I honestly had to google what this was all about and after watching sixtyodd years of watching football I have to shake my head.

I honestly thought that it was a NUFC tribute to him to be put up in the ground which is fair enough as it is their choice but the business of it being a monument for the City is plain crackers. The only suggestion I can make is that if there is one for him then statues of the cup winning teams of the fifties should line the route to the ground finally topped off with one for Stan Seymour, their most successful manager.

In any event I would have though that a modest lad like him would have turned the offer down.

I'm not in his league mate, he's a right queer bugger!

If Newcastle are tarnished by you lot, I'll defend, especially on a Sunday night when I've been talking to Stella.

I'll probably regret a bit of my comments tomorrow. <ok>

Have what you like, he can go next to the 'historic gates' ....... statues should be for winners imo.

I wouldn't want a statue for Rowell or 'Golden Boot winner SKP, they achieved nothing for Sunderland.

Shearer won nothing at Newcastle ....... have two statues, if you like, one with hair and one as he really is <laugh>

Those gates are embarrassing! Jesus, at least they could lead somewhere. To be honest, I've never even noticed them, that's possibly due to the fact I'm half pissed every game.

Granted, Shearer won nowt at Newcastle. Doesn't stop him from being an absolute legend. Surely you can appreciate that?

didnt Shearer hold the club to ransom by having it written in his contract that he must always be the highest earner at the club? If I'm right, then for that reason alone, he does not deserve a statue. Quality player, but I find the idea of statues of modern footballers quite absurd to be honest.

Football isn't just about winning though mate.

As Sunderland fans we know that better than most.

If that was the case we'd all support Man United/Liverpool and they'd have 1500 statues and no ****er else would have any.

There's no shame in celebrating a hero, regardless of winning. They're still a hero.

Joe Harvey was at Newcastle over 20 years, won cups as a player & manager and gets nowt but a plaque paid for by someone else.

Shearer won nowt, was there half that time and gets a statue ........ welcome to the Sky generation.

I find it hard to label modern footballers as 'heroes.' If you had to pick anybody for the town from over the last 20 years it would be Shearer. Still doesnt deserve it though! Even modern players who have actually won something, I still find it hard to warrant them having statues made of them.

I doubt there's many mags who think the bloke shouldn't have a statue and the statue is for them and their club.

That bloke is a hero in that strange little city up north, simple as that.
