Am going to Florida in August - anybody got any must see places to visit as I've not been before. Am doing the minimum Disney visit possible to keep the wife and daughter happy (one day), and will go to Universal a couple of times. I also have a couple of days fishing sorted and a road trip to key west on the cards but have 4 or 5 days with no concrete plans. Any suggestions or advice would be great.
Bradley Wiggins has just smashed the Hour record at the Lee Valley Velodrome. 54.526 km in one hour. That's on a push bike. The word legend is used frequently about athletes but Wiggo most certainly is one.
He said he'd do it. He was so confident it wasn't true. It was a good record as well. So, in speed figures I have a feel for, he averaged nearly 34 miles an hour. Amazing.
Going to be fishing off the sunshine skyway pier after dropping my wife n daughter off at the Zoo in Tampa so will do a bit of exploring round and about the Tampa bay area. Not too bothered about Busch Gardens simply because of the link with SeaWorld, as I have concerns about captive Orcas and won't support anything involved with them. St Pete's looks nice, got a friend in Miami so could combine 2 visits.
He beat the previous record by almost 7 laps which is pretty amazing. They showed a list of Wiggo's achievements and it is fairly staggering: 7 Olympic medals, World Time Trial Champion, first Briton to win the Tour de France, has worn the leader's jersey in all 3 Grand Tours (Giro d'Italia, Vuelta de España, and of course the TDF), and now the Hour record. He seemed a bit peeved that having given the organisers a playlist of his favourite tracks to play he couldn't hear any of it because of the noise the crowd were making!
Will be checking out Universal Parks so will be going to Islands of adventure. I'm not massively into theme parks though as I get a bit bored with rides - I guess its because they're (supposed to be) safe so I don't get that danger adrenaline rush that I would get from riding a fast bike or parachuting. Its why I used to free climb rather than use ropes, so I guess I prefer real danger for my buzz
He must have been having difficulty getting into the zone then. It's funny how listening to music when doing a rhythmic exercise, or making a rhythmic effort like cycling, can help you to focus on the exercise and greatly ease the pain of effort, sometimes to almost nothing. When I used to swim for exercise I'd sing songs to myself, but they had to be of the right rhythm for the stroke, otherwise I used to get out kilter. Done right I could swim for hours or miles. I'd get out of pool when I couldn't think of any more songs to sing in my head. Often I'd swum several miles though I usually stopped at one. Fairly quickly too, mainly front crawl.
Well done! Captive dolphins are also not good. I've been whale watching and that's when it really comes home to you how bad SeaWorld and such places are. There is (or was) captive dolphins in a small tank in Epcot which is awful for such a highly social mammal which swims miles normally. Right I'll get off my soap box now and return to the shadows.
