Liverpool news and transfers: Reds turn attention to a new full-back - Burnley's Kieran Trippier?

Raheem Sterling is the subject of Rafa Benitez's attention with Real Madrid boss to tell Liverpool not to sell to an English club
    • Rafa Benitez will try to dissuade old club Liverpool from selling to Man City
    • New Real Madrid boss signed Sterling as a 15-year-old while on Merseyside
    • Sterling is refusing to sign a new contract and City are ready to bid £30million
    • Benitez will use Madrid's location as a factor in the bargaining process

    • AC Milan are interested in a shock transfer to bring Liverpool flop Mario Balotelli back to Serie A.
The madcap striker only joined the Kop from AC last summer for a fee worth £16m.
But Italian outfit Corriere dello Sport say Milan have had a change of heart and want Balotelli back.
European football journalist Andy Brassell has told Brendan Rodgers to take a look at Toulouse striker Ben Yedder.
He thinks the Frenchman would suit Liverpool far better than Balotelli.
He told Bleacher Report: "Yeah I think he could [be better value than Balotelli] because he really fits the Liverpool style.
"He's not a big guy and originally people didn’t think he'd make it in professional football because he wasn’t big enough.

Carlos Tevez is reportedly edging closer to a transfer to Liverpool as Juventus began lining up his replacement.
The Argentine star has been linked with a move away from Turin with Liverpool as the most likely suitors.
Juventus have accepted his departure and have now targeted Atletico Madrid's Mario Mandzukic or Edinson Cavani of Paris St Germain.
The Old Lady are aware of Tevez's desire of a new challenge following their Champions League final defeat, according to Tuttomercatoweb.
And it seems that Liverpool could be in pole position to land the forward.

Big fan of Kovacic but doesn't really solve our key issues.

If I said can henderson milner kovacic would you not be reasonably pleased

Given Lucas legs were gone day one along with Gerrard last year and Allen is too light weight

Can, Henderson, Milner, Kovacic is alright, but still not really good enough for top 4 which is where we need to be right now. Would they get into Arsenal, City or Chelsea's midfield? United's probably, but their midfield is weaker than their table position imo - they just under performed less than we and Spuds did.

Solid midfield, but we're not going to be able to rely on those four as a platform to push higher, are we?

That's not bad options, can is strong and brings te ball forward, Milner and Hendo can provide lots of energy and are more creative than they get credit for. Kovacic has big potential and can be creative while also Lucas and Allen provide decent depth.

Also have Coutinho to add to that list as well.

O my problem is there aren't huge amount of goals.. Hendo and Milner should be looking at 5 each and Coutinho 5-10 in a good season. Still heavily reliant on striker to get goals and at the moment, only 1 is capable of getting 20 and Sturridge can't be relied on atm.

Yeah, it's a solid midfield. Some creativity, some defensive work and lots of hard graft and energy.

But it's not got anyone that's going to grab a game and drive you forward (Coutinho aside, perhaps). Whereas Chelea, City and Arsenal all have multiple players who will do that. As you say, although for different reasons, it just means we'll be ever reliant on the forwards to push us on - whilst we're lacking in that department right now and no obvious name seemingly lined up - I don't believe Tevez will arrive.

True, I think you need to compare it against our main rivals for 4th in United, Spurs (Saints?) and it's no worse than those 3.

The difference between the top 3 and ours is they have a nice blend of experience and youth.

Arsenal - Ozil, Cazorla, Riosicky all experienced and in their prime coupled with youth of Coquelin, Ramsey, Wilshire.
Chelsea - Matic, Ramires, FAbregas experienced and in their prime
City - Toure, Fernando, Fernandino, Silva all experienced and in their prime.

We on the other hand have lots of youth with the odd experienced player.
Lucas/Milner with Hendo, Allen, Coutinho, Can all young. Think that's why Milner is agood signing, someone that brings that experience of being in a successful winning team and provides consistency.

Our midfield at the moment isn't as good but in 2-3 years time, Hendo, Can, Coutinho, potentially Kovacic will all be in their prime and who's to say that won't be a brilliant midfield?

  13. That midfield is fine. My concern would be the lack of DM but as we all know, Brod doesn't like them

I hope Pako (should he actually arrive) would be able to transform Can into a Schweinsteiger type of midfielder who is able to sit deep and use strength to break up play, but know when to drive forward and support the attack. Our performances dipped when Pako left and we certainly weren't as tight defensively suggesting that Pako worked well on our tactical and defensive side. Ballack also sat deep at times in his career and drove forward and Can has received comparisons to him when in Germany.

He could be the long term choice...

I know youtube is not the best scouting tool but Kovacic is a very creative player. I see him as competition for Coutinho and Lallana rather than Hendo, Can and Milner. That said, my biggest concern has always been we must get the striking department correct to have any chance of challenging for the top 4 positions. We may lack a DM but the energy in those midfield options can cover sufficiently.

I think he plays deeper than Coutinho but likes to bring the ball forward with his dribbling skills rather than being creative from deep or receiving the ball with his back to goal like in that number 10 position.

I think Coutinho & Kovacic could easily play on the same team,

And yotube can't tell you if a player is good or bad... but it can give you an indication of the type of player they are.
