Yes. It really was. I can't think of a single redeeming feature of that England performance, either by any of the players or by the manager. Wilshire looked ok but had zero end product, the rest were terrible.

"The camera cuts to a very, very bored-looking England bench. Hard to read Charlie Austin's expression, but can't imagine he is overly thrilled at not having got on the pitch in a game that has needed something to inject a bit of life into it."

"A chance to look at new players? Austin should've been given 30 mins minimum to prove he is international pedigree."

Very poor game. A typical and of season friendly. Mostly all England in the 2nd half, but with zero creativity. With Henderson and Milner trying to pull the strings, England will never create much. Neither are International standard imo.
Very strange not giving Austin a run out. What was the point of calling him up?

England need to find a good young centre back, as Jagielka, Smalling and Jones are very average.

Get Wilshire on the ball further forward and don't let Henderson or Milner ever get into the squad.

England are a promising counter-attacking side when set up correctly with the right players in the right positions.

Have a look at him I am guessing
But Vardy has more energy IMO
I say again fear stops England
England should be winning against that Irish side by a few goals and a performance
    Too safe
Maybe it's just me as back in UK until July 10th but having watched a few local French sides in Junor football I see such a gulf in creativity between English and other footballing nations

Austin is not doubt a English centre forward but if cut off the supply then sorry he is nothing without creavity behind him

No it wasn't. They had the possession in most of the final 20 minutes as you'd expect with the substitutes but it was 50/50 other than that.

It was a very even game.

We have players who can give him the service, but they never got a chance to show that because we never played a striker. That was effectively the same 4-6-0 that Scotland tried a few years back.

Agree. England improved, but I thought Ireland looked most likely to score in the first half.

I'm sorry, but I just don't get that.
England played 4-3-3 with Rooney as the striker in the centre. He was then replaced by Vardy who lacked a decent touch imo (although so did Rooney, who looked terribly rusty).
The main problem was that England were very rusty at the end of the season and Sterling and Rooney in particular were very poor.

I think we'll have to settle for a draw next week, as they will still be very rusty.

Yes, more possession as you'd expect. How does that equate to being all England if you're just stroking it around the midfield the whole time? You sound like a Chelsea fan after being matched by QPR. Big team syndrome! You should be a Leeds supporter

As Goldie said, Ireland had as many chances. Murphy missed a sitter fist half and Rooney missed one in the second. I don't know why that guy melts when he gets into an England shirt. Its a bizarre phenomenon.

It was an awful game. Ireland matched a very below par England in a truly awful, meaningless, end of season friendly.

IMO England are a much better side than Ireland and would beat them 8 times out of 10 in a competitive game.
England have a very dodgy defence, particularly so today with their two first choice fullbacks missing.
Rooney has always looked very poor when he hasn't been on a run of games. He was terrible today, as was Sterling.
When they are firing, England would destroy Ireland on the counter attack imo..

Ireland gave their all as they always do against England and had the better of the chances. (Oh and the National Anthem was booed and whistled very loudly. I suggest you have another listen).

Rooney didn't play as a striker. He spent less time in their box than anyone. Rooney's strength - that he always plays to - is coming deep and receiving the ball, then trying to run at the defence. That's not a central striker, it's an attacking midfielder. We didn't put a decent ball into the box that wasn't easily dealt with, because we didn't have anyone there capable of challenging for it. We had players in Henderson, Milner, Bertrand and Jones who can't cross the ball or pick out a pass, and Lallana and Sterling did nothing of note all game. Don't even get me started on Smalling.

Change the formation to one that has an identified striker, get him to PLAY as a striker, and then use the entire width of the pitch with players that know how to play a pass or cross the ball so that it misses the first man but doesn't then miss them all.
