Mrs CT went for a teaching job. There were six applicants and we knew the head teacher socially. He told her not to be disappointed when she didnt get the job as it had already been decided who the successful candidate would be. One of the applicants had travelled from Chesterfield to Lowestoft for the job but he said they had to offer interviews.
So, for example, a club intends to shortlist 6 people for a managerial post. It shortlists what it feels are the 6 'best' candidates. A 7th candidate is also shortlisted under the 'Rooney Rule'. All seven candidates are interviewed. After interviews, the club are slightly surprised when the 'Rooney Rule' candidate performs best at interview, and after consideration is given the job. The 'best person for the job' got it, so what's the problem?
Basically. Or which is the more normal route in the states, they apply to be the first team coach, everyone agrees that they're not right for it but that they may be good in a different position. In the states it's just for the head coach position but has improved the diversity throughout the coaching staff. It's all about exposure.
There is a bias towards Scottish managers at Carrow road, they are better than us apart from Gunn and Grant so long may it continue.
It is positive discrimination, I can't see how that can be argued against. It us however not that bad a thing. Ultimately if you were missed in the original 4,5 or 6 candidates and a black candidate was the 5,6 or 7th, would u really have been in with much of a shout. They already felt you were an outsider. Ultimately though if I am told! to interview someone, I think they would have to be quite significantly better than the others otherwise I would be thinking f#ck the pc brigade, I'll go with my choices not this nonsense. I still think a genuinely good candidate what ever ethnicity will get the jobs their skill and ability level deserves. Bah!
I have no problem with it, institutionalised racism exists in this country and it puts people off trying in certain walks of life, I agree the best person should get the job but people from certain backgrounds should be encouraged to apply for jobs. Discrimination exists in this country in regards to some careers, it's not just racial or gender based, I know people who have struggled to fit into certain high end jobs due to their class background, sounds absolutely crazy but if your of working or middle class and have a bit of regional accent you get looked down on in some places.
