I have already done my money on the Derby as I backed Best Of Times at 33/1 ante post on the morning of the Cocked Hat Stakes and he was double the odds after the race, where he failed to threaten the winner Storm The Stars. I do not think that is great form so I do not fancy William Haggas’ charge.

I was at Newmarket when Golden Horn won the Feilden Stakes and I thought he looked like a ten furlong horse that day and I have not revised my opinion. I do think he is the best horse in the race, but the owner has blown £75k to find out the hard way and I would not have him at the price anyway. He is my idea of an Eclipse horse on 4th July.

The one to be on may be Elm Park, who I expect to finish much closer to Jack Hobbs if handling the track and ground, but he makes as little appeal as Giovanni Canaletto at the odds. It is not beyond the realms of possibility that Success Days could land a fairy tale victory if he goes on the ground.

I do not think that a woman trainer has ever been responsible for a Derby winner, so how about a French woman with an unexposed horse, Epicuris, if he handles the ground?

The Coronation Cup is in reality a match between the two French raiders, Flintshire and Dolniya. They last met at Meydan and Alain De Royer Dupre’s filly won convincingly. Whilst the revised terms give Andre Fabre’s five year old a three pound pull, Flintshire really wants quick ground and a strongly run race, which I do not think he will get. As he never wins when I back him, watch him bolt up today as I give him a miss.

So the search for something to bet on switches to Musselburgh: the combination to follow throughout the card appears to be Mark Johnston and Silvestre de Sousa (2:15 First Party, 2:50 Polarisation, 3:25 Yorkidding, 4:00 Sur Empire), but... in the 2:50, I fancy Richard Fahey’s THIRD TIME LUCKY to complete the hat-trick!

Resonant 4/1 Epsom 2:00 should prove far too strong for these over ten furlongs in the opener.

Have Giovanni Canaletto ante post as stated 2 weeks back in the Derby thread so hoping he wins that. I will be very suprised if Golden Horn wins this, slow run Dante he easily quickened away there but this won't be run as slow and I think he may have too much to do at the end and fail.

Broctune Papa Gio 15/2 Newcastle 7:10 is weighted to reverse form with So It's Was who beat the selection by 0.5 of a length the last day.

Song Of Norway 11/4 Musselburgh 1:10 can follow up a recent win at Catterick here in a weaker looking contest.

4 bets for a Saturday..well it is Derby day! Good luck.

Two questions - first, is Sea The Stars the best winner of the Derby since Mill Reef? (I know some people will say Shergar is, but Sea The Stars won Group 1 races over a mile and 10 furlongs so proved himself to be more versatile, plus he won the Arc which Shergar didn't do)

Secondly, is anyone prepared to lay Golden Horn on the exchanges? Simon Holt said he's a good thing, but I have my doubts. He's the best horse in the field IMO, but I don't know if he'll be outstayed or will handle the course. But worth having a saver on.

If I'll be honest I find it hard getting getting excited about the English flat but it's sure it's derby day so two small wagers.Tracey Collins sends irish raider Chiclet to run in the sprint and has sound EW claims at 16s.Very poor renewal of the Derby but preference is for Elm Park

Impressive win by Stravagante in the opener at Epsom. But I still won't be backing Jack Hobbs!

I'd rather back Elm Park in the Irish Derby on a flatter track with some cut in the ground. But good luck to connections, the trainer will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of the great Mill Reef trained by his dad.

Sea The Stars was the best of a bad bunch. None of his form reads like a superstar. His consistency was unbelievable, but his bare form was nothing special:biggrin:

King of Rooks has won it's last two races comfortably, bound to be a short price (maybe odds on) whichever race he runs in at Royal Ascot, will be in lots of accumulator bets on the day.

Channel 4 just showed Lammtarra's Derby from 20 years ago, I wonder what price it was in running!
