Ok you ready for this? This is Nick Cave to a mental T! He'd written it so that Maximus was reincarnated by the gods as immortal. He defends the Christians, meets his son and goes on to eventually lead tanks in the second world war!

IIRC Bergman says "Play it for me Sam, play it for old times sakes." Later that night when Rick is getting pissed he tells Sam "you played it for her you can play it for me, now play it!"
