He's worked in Asia before so has a lot of connections out there.

He's done a very good job from a commercial perspective but as a CEO/MD, he's laughable. Getting p*ssed up all the time as well. Also bankrupted Huddersfield when he was in charge over there.

Long enough to give us a hefty fee for Sterling and then sunsequently sell us the best of Real Madrid's youth. Agent Rafa, we salute you. Glad he is at Madrid, if he is not with us I know there is no where else he would rather be. All the best Rafa

    Erm.....why?
Cup Winners Cup just as good as the Europey League Cup.
Super Cups sure, Euro equivalent of the Charity Shield.

EDIT: Ahh just checked...its cos Liverpool never won one <ok>

I would even argue it was better than the Europa League, since you actually had to win something to qualify and not just finish 5th or 6th in the league.

bod is right the cup winners cup was a good comp in its say. its far bigger acheivement than the stupid super cup.

that is the most pointless game of the year and its location in monaco shows so. tiny ground.

I think the point was 3 CL [or their old name] cups each.

Its just that whoever said it included Rafa's UEFA cup wins in his total.
So including SAF's Cup Winners Cups is only fair.
If we are talking just CL's its still 2 - 1 to SAF

Super cups, champion of the world cups, champion of the universe cups .... you could put all the winners in a new comp to fight it out and call it any name you like. Cup winners cup comp is a feather in your cap because you had to win a cup to even be in a 'winners' comp, no argument there. I think sisu's comment was just about 3 CL cups each though.

EDIT - Bod's put me straight on it.

    How come?
Unless Rafa wins the CL next year in his one season as Real manager. :bandit:
He'll probably be back at Liverpool in 2016 when Real sack him and Rodgers gets the boot <ok>

Thats not necessarily a slight on Rafa's abilities to be honest either.
If he doesnt win La Liga or the CL next season, he will most likely go.....thats just Real for ya.

  12. Champions League / European Cup, Europa League / UEFA Cup and Cup-Winners-Cup (later formed part of Europa League) should all count in comparisons. Just like the Premier League / First Division, FA Cup and League Cup should. The likes of Charity Shield, Super Cup, World Club Cup, International Cup, etc shouldn't count as they are glorified friendlies.

Danny Murphy believes Rafael Benitez could be heading for disaster at Real Madrid.

The former Liverpool star, who spent a brief period under Benitez during his time in charge at Anfield, offered a fascinating insight into the Spaniard’s personality on the Colin Murray show.

And, recalling how his direct character often riled players, Murphy claimed the 55-year-old will struggle to get Real’s star-studded squad on side if his management style hasn’t changed.

“My gut feeling is it might end in tears, just with the type of players and egos he is dealing with at Real Madrid,” said the ex-England international.

“My understanding of him all those years ago, the type of personality he is, he is going to have to eat a bit of humble pie and bite his tongue at times with the type of squad he has inherited.

“The lads I spoke to for many years after [I left], the likes of Carra, Stevie [Gerrard], they were always respectful of him because he knew his football, he knew how to organise, and the results showed that. He knows his football, but it was his way or the highway most of the time.

“A story which was evident of his personality was on his first day [at Liverpool]. On the training pitch he came up to Stevie G and me and there was no 'how are you', or anything like that. He simply said to me, ‘you need to be more like him’. And he said to Stevie, ‘you need to be more like him’.

“What he was saying to me was I needed to be fitter and stronger and run about more, put myself about more, like Stevie. And he was saying to Stevie he had to learn more about technical awareness, something I had, which I got from Crewe mainly, having being coached so well as a kid.

“It was said in such a direct manner that it was like ‘wow, this guy is new, but he has already been watching videos, he has seen us play, he knows what he wants’. That is the footing he started off on.

“Now he is dealing with the biggest players in the world. Has he found that compromise?

“He had a big bust-up with the senior players at Inter Milan, [Javier] Zanetti being the main guy. Has he backed down a little bit or mellowed a little bit where he can communicate with top stars?”

Thing is, if he falls out with a big player, a fan favourite, Ronaldo for example, the fans will turn on him quickly, and he will face the same hostility he received at Chelsea.
I personally understood why the fans at SB hated him, I shared their feelings, but I thought booing him during home games was counter productive.
Not really gonna help the team is it.

Hi DR <smooch> - you not been around much. Good little article. I think Rafa struggled with English to start with and tbh it didn't get much better by his own admission, so communication was difficult. But that aside, by all accounts he was quite abrupt character anyway which was something the players weren't used to. Gerrard said he would have liked a 'well done' every once in a while. Like Murphy says though, he does his homework and in his native country with 'his' team maybe it will work in his favour.

He knows he'll get eaten up and spat out there.

Is he arsed? Is he ****

He'll do the job to the best of his ability, fail and then get canned, waltzing off with a large cheque in his arse pocket - again.

I suspect he kinda sees it like this.
    Its a win-win for Rafa.
If he goes there and is successful, then great.
If not, he fails, then leaves with £10m in his pocket.

Not really a way it can end badly for Rafa.

I wonder what kind of team Rafa will go for, and which left back will play in midfield... 2 holding players is a given.

Its already been said that he see's Bale in a central free role.
