To start with, well done to the lad on overcoming his cancer. However, to quote Jonas from the original article: ''I didn't expect to get offered a new contract but it's not about that, you have to move on,' also he doesn't fit their age profile, he's been out on loan under Pardew as they clearly didn't fancy him as part of the future and it took a slew of suspensions to allow him back into a paper thin squad. Similar with Taylor who was out for over a year with a serious injury that he has done very well to come back from at all.
I think the fact that both lads appear to have played out their contracts right to the end, with no apparent discussions on the horizon (and that's their agents job), must have been a bit of a giveaway. It won't have come as a surprise to either of them. The press are just making a big deal about them both being told in 1 phonecall, when everyone knew they were together on the same training course. Just another bit of speculation based on half-stories in the press.
It doesn't seem much to ask that the club makes two phone calls; one to each player. Passing the phone over seems a bit crass. What if there'd been more of them? Been passing the phone round the lads getting the boot? Not nice...
Politeness and respect aren't being precious IMHO. We're talking about a tiny modicum of effort. Otherwise you could just text them that their P45s are in the post!
There was no P45 though Sid. These guys were out of contract. My wife's an I.T. Consultant, usually on 6 month contracts. When the contract ends she's not expecting an arm round the shoulder, a goodbye card or a phone call from the boss telling her not to come in the next day. I know the circumstances are slightly different but I just think this is all being blown out of proportion. These guys are treated like children. They earn a ****ing fortune, maybe up to a 100 times more than the kids in the stands, don't turn up (professionally) half the time, and cry if they don't get a bloody cake for their birthday. They're just not that high up on my list when it comes to dishing out empathy!
