Superb news !, it will be a laugh at listening to him pronouncing the foreign players' names he will bring in, should have had McLaren as number to though as he is worse !. I sink we vill do well in the Dutch league playing the vootball.

Sky are reporting that Viera is not a target for them any more, and that Carver is going to be spoken to

Everything crossed that he gets the job - match made in heaven.

Looks like it's gonna be McClaren or Carver, straight shootout. McClaren has already turned them down twice, make that three times and the human dustbin keeps his job.

Former Arsenal and Manchester City midfielder Vieira, 38, City's under-21 manager, had been considered as a replacement for John Carver.

But both parties opted not to pursue a possible deal following differences over recruitment and transfer policy.

McClaren is tipped to take over after being sacked by Derby last month.

Carver had also wanted to take the job on a permanent basis after acting as caretaker since Alan Pardew's departure to Crystal Palace in January.

The 50-year-old, who guided Newcastle to Premier League safety on the final day of the season when a 2-0 win over West Ham gave them a first win in 11 games, is expected to stay on the coaching staff at St James' Park.

BBC Sport at about 4.30 pm today.

So do we Nostalgic, that's the problem!

At what point does a club cease to be "your club"? I can handle relegations and bad times that are part and parcel of being a 'supporter' but the levels of disenchantment make me think twice about how I feel about NUFC and I never thought that could happen. When I say that the appointment of Carver could turn me away from the club I don't mean it in a melodramatic manner but simply the culmination of years of erosion of goodwill, what would I actually be supporting? The players - not really what its about; the club - what club? It's just a business and the model is to cut corners and spend as little as possible but survive in the cash cow league.

Sounds as much a disenchantment with football as much as your club Haslam. A sad indictment on any club that turns enthusiasts away from not only themselves but their sport in general.

I'm pretty sure though that come August your enthusiasm for your club will be firing on all cylinders.

Fair point Blunham and come August I'm sure I will be following my teams progress but I honestly think it will be a touch more distantly than this season and that was a touch more distant than the season before. It is the game in general but I think Newcastle are a particularly strong example of it - minimal effort on recruitment, no effort in the cups, rebranding the stadium, moving merchandising revenue over to sports direct, gifting advertising to sports direct, turning profits and just leaving the money sat in the bank whilst the team suffers. With other clubs this may be seen as incompetence or complacency, with us its the entire business plan. This season couldn't have gone better for Ashley, lower expectations, survive, hell even make money on an unpopular manager you were being pressured to sack.

Anyhoo apologies, I've had my rant! Just pretty sick of it at the moment and don't see it changing.

Honestly think your owner wants to succeed and achieve something with Sunderland but hasn't quite got the formula right so far but is going to keep trying.
